Non smart card login

I would like first to introduce myself. I am a Lab Manager in Sun. My weblog has in the past had many items on Sun Rays. I use a facility which perhaps some people do not know about. It is called Non Smart Card Mobility or NSCM for short. Basically it does away with the need for a smart card.

I just login using my stardard Unix login and password and my session appears back on the screen. If I do not have a session one will be created based upon the policies the administrator sets up - load balancing etc. This means for me at Sun where my card is used for buying food letting me into rooms etc I don't have to remember to pull the card out of the Sun Ray on leaving my desk.

There are several ways you can detach the session before leaving your Sun Ray. You can use shift and the Pause key sequence or run a command called /opt/SUNWut/bin/utdetach. I use the latter and have setup on my Gnome panel an icon which runs /opt/SUNWut/bin/utdetach for me. I hope to write some other articles soon on using the Fair share scheduler on Sun Ray servers and coreadm policies. If there are other items you are interested in add a comment below.

Comments:

I use the same facility, but whats more is, my sunray appliance is on my desk in France, and the sunray server I connect to is back in blighty! I find it just amazing that I can run my session from a machine several hundred miles away, and the performance is absolutely amazing! /opt/sunwut/bin/utswitch -h <hostname> ... All you readers, Try it!
