Flying Solo

My wife is taking my oldest daughter and her best friend to southern California for three days to visit the beach and a few amusement parks.  I'm still trying to figure out if it's what she wanted for her birthday or it's something my wife wanted her to want.  Normally when she goes out of town, I have the benefit of the kids being in school.  Seeing as they are already bored with summer vacation, this could be a long three days.  Baby is waking up, gotta run.

Overheard @ Preschool

Mom: Careful, don't run into that gentleman (i.e. Me)

Child: He's not a gentleman, he's a daddy!

Feeling Guilty

Geez...Can a guy get a little "alone time" with his new lab gear without being made to feel guilty?  And this...from my own browser!  :)

A message for fathers

I know a lot of you out there are busy.  I know the world is a place that is crazy, unfair, scary, etc, etc, etc

Delaney (8) and Maggie (6) had "Donuts with Dad Day" at their school today.  While we were doing our usual gabbing back and forth (everything from the upcoming soccer season to making fun of the Principal) I looked up.  Here is what I saw from most of the "Dads" that attended:

1) Talking on their mobile phones (Sure they could be doctors and such, but I heard a lot of "what's up dude?" type answers)

2) Blank stares forward while their daughters/sons ate their donuts.  Nary a word was spoken.

3) Dads hanging out together while their children sat alone eating donuts.

Dudes...It's really simple.  You are "THE MAN" in these kids lives.  Be involved, take interest.  Turn off your mobile for 30 minutes, the world will wait (even if you are a doctor).  Talk to them.  They are yours.  Your are theirs.  There really is no good excuse unless of course you are dead.

You'll never make anything more worthwhile or important in your life as a child.  And that is straight from my heart and there's nothing you could say to convince me otherwise.  I've heard it all.  As I like to say "Been there, got the shirt".

Remember anyone can father a child, it takes a special person to be a Dad.
