ZFS & Virtualization Enhancements in Solaris 10 10/08 OS

With the Solaris 10 10/08 release, systems running Solaris 10 can boot from ZFS and use ZFS as their root file system. Solaris 10 10/08 also includes enhancements for Solaris Containers and Logical Domains.

Comments:

When I clicked on the "What's New with Solaris 10 10/08 - Watch the Video" link, all four video clips will show up "simultaneously".

This is quite embarrassing. Please have someone correct it. Thanks.

Hi. I passed along your comment to the owner of that Solaris 10 page, but I don't see the problem. I checked on two different machines. Could you tell us what platform/setup you are on? Thanks!

Wow. Looks good. I only wish it were called "Solaris 09/08" or maybe even "Solaris 08/08" ;)

Is the X4500 supported here, with the various SATA controller fixes? I'd love to update our Thumper...

Thanks, Charles Soto, for your comment. I checked with Solaris Marketing: The x4500 is fully supported under Solaris 10 10/08 with the new features, so you should be able to upgrade from the Solaris version that is installed on your current system to the new version.
Once the new release is out, check the release notes for any special instructions on upgrading to see if there are any special instructions for machines that you want to upgrade. At this time there is nothing special for the x4500 but it's always better to check once the final notes are published.

Another comment for W. Wayne Liauh: Thanks again for pointing out the issue with multiple videos showing on the sun.com page. I checked with them, and found this out: It you don't let the page load completely before selecting which one of the videos to watch, you'll have this issue. Cheers!

Does Solaris 10 10/08 comes with
gzip compression in ZFS?

RE: Borut's comment: Does Solaris 10 10/08 comes with
gzip compression in ZFS? -- I don't know, but I will pass this query along and let you know what I can find out. Also, you could look here:

More on Borut's comment: Does Solaris 10 10/08 come with gzip compression in ZFS? Here's the answer: Yes -- ZFS supports lzjb, gzip, or gzip-/N. Cheers!
