Herbalife was the focus of the “Best Practices in Innovation” feature in the February 2012 edition of the Consumer Goods Technology publication. Herbalife is a consumer goods companies offering products for weight management, targeted nutrition, energy and fitness, and skin and hair care. The company achieved record sales in 2010, and continues to face growing product complexity as they delve into new markets and improve their offerings. Gary Swanson, Vice President of Corporate Quality, says, “PLM allows the company to operate unimpeded, 24 hours a day, seven days a week on product development and other activities.” They use the Agile PLM solution, particularly the Oracle Product Lifecycle Analytics application, to improve decision support across the enterprise while tracking product changes with built-in capabilities, like audit train and sign-off history, which are requirements in a compliance and regulated industry. Oracle is partnering with Kroger and Kalypso to help companies understand the changes and stay ahead of the curve on “Are You Ready for New Food Safety Regulatory Requirements?”, a live webcast March 15, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. PDT. Fred Brown, a partner at Kalypso and an expert in regulatory compliance and quality issues facing private label retail and food manufacturers, will address how organizations can leverage product lifecycle management (PLM) to meet regulatory requirements. Bob Hosfeld, senior manager at Kroger Corporate Food Technology and Wes Frierson, director of PLM product strategy at Oracle, will join Brown as they discuss new regulations that challenge manufacturer compliance screening. Atrium Medical Corporation shared their Agile PLM case study on our oracle.com customer showcase, entitled how Atrium Medical Corporation Reduces Engineering Change Order Cycle by 48% First Year after Deploying Product Lifecycle Management Solution. Atrium Medical Corporation is a leader in medical device technologies for interventional cardiology and radiology, chest trauma care and thoracic drainage, vascular surgery, and general surgery. The company, which was recently acquired by Getinge Group, produces more than 2.7 million sterile medical products annually and distributes them in more than 60 countries.
Atrium adheres to ISO 13485 quality standards, which define a comprehensive management system for medical device design and manufacturing. It is also committed to advancing discovery and driving product development and manufacturing innovation. To continue to meet these objectives as it grew rapidly, Atrium looked to accelerate and further standardize engineering change order (ECO) processes for its medical devices, as well as create a closed-loop corrective and preventive quality-event process to enable root cause analysis and drive improvement, moving forward.
Atrium worked with Oracle Insight, which assessed the company’s product lifecycle management (PLM) processes and helped it define an effective IT platform strategy to optimize product collaboration and quality management. The medical device manufacturer deployed Oracle’s Agile PLM solutions, including Agile Product Collaboration and Agile Product Quality Management, in 2010―standardizing processes, improving collaboration and communication, and accelerating ECOs and time to market. In the first year of deployment, Atrium reduced ECO cycle time by 48%, even as the number of change orders increased nearly 15%.
