A Discussion with Oracle's Expert on Innovation Management

Gayle HayesA few weeks ago I had the opportunity to sit down with our resident expert on Innovation Management, Gayle Hayes. I picked her brain on what’s going on in the world of product and service innovation and how Oracle is helping. A new phenomenon is sweeping product development – thanks to an explosion of ideation tools and techniques such as crowd-sourcing, big data, mashups, customer immersion labs, etc, finding ideas is not the problem. With so many to choose from, the biggest questions are now “which idea?” and subsequently, “how do you translate the right idea into a profitable product?"

This is precisely the challenge the new Oracle Innovation Management is designed to address. To learn more about the idea glut and how the new solution helps organizations improve return on innovation investments, read the transcript of our discussion below or stream our podcast. You can even find us on iTunes!

Top 5 Reasons to Attend Oracle Value Chain Summit 2014!

Here we are again, at the end of another year. And at the same time, we're looking forward to 2014 and the upcoming Oracle Value Chain Summit (OVCS 2014), taking place in San Jose, California, from February 3-5. There are only a few short weeks left for customers to register for this annual event at the bargain rate of $495--a $200 savings from the onsite registration rate of $695. Register here to take advantage of this great Early Bird offer!

Need a little extra convincing to attend OVCS 2014? Check out the Top 5 list below to see why the Oracle Value Chain Summit will be the #1 event in 2014 you won't want to miss.

1. OVCS 2014: It's Bigger and Better!

We were so grateful and excited, but also overwhelmed with the number of customers who participated in the 2013 Oracle Value Chain Summit, which took place in San Francisco. We heard your feedback--the meeting rooms were too small and the venue was too crowded. So we have relocated OVCS 2014 to a new venue--the newly renovated McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California. This new venue offers bigger rooms, and is much better equipped to accommodate the need for classroom space, meeting rooms and networking. The Convention Center is conveniently located, within walking distance to several hotels and restaurants in downtown San Jose, and is just 15 minutes away from San Jose's Mineta International Airport.

2. Networking, Networking, Networking

We have heard over and over from our customers that the best reason to attend events like OVCS 2014 is the opportunity to network with fellow Agile users. The best conversations often occur spontaneously during breaks between sessions, or at the end of the day, over cocktails. OVCS 2014 will offer attendees plenty of time to meet with other customers over breakfast, lunches and networking receptions. We have also carved out an additional hour out of the schedule each day for dedicated networking time.

3. Even More Customer Sessions and Speakers

OVCS 2014 is THE premier educational event for anyone in the Agile PLM community. There are over 30 PLM-focused in-depth educational sessions led by Agile PLM experts, customers and partners that will cover a range of product and industry-focused topics. Check out the latest Product Value Chain agenda here. Speakers include:

  • OVCS 2014 General Session Speakers: In addition to industry luminary and bestselling author Geoffrey Moore and Jane Barrett, Gartner's Supply Chain Research Group Vice President, other OVCS 2014 General Session Speakers include GE Appliances Kevin Uhls, Supply Chain IT Leader and Jim Lebs, VP of Supply Chain for Sonic Drive-In.
  • Product Value Chain General Session Speakers: John Kelley, VP of Product Strategy for Product Value Chain, will kick off our PVC General Session with an Overview and Roadmap for PVC. We also have some great executive speakers that will be presenting in the PVC General Session, including:
    • Linda Henkel, Senior Director, Worldwide Quality Systems, McDonald's
    • Mike Twomey, VP Supply Chain Strategy, Transformation and Logistics, Motorola
    • Ken Ulrich, Director, Information Technology, Motorola
    • Terry Ruttan, VP Business Operations, NBTY

4. New User Experience Demo Area

We have upgraded our demo grounds so that attendees can better view our products up close, and even try them in a hands-on environment. Our new demo grounds will consist of three major components:

  • A hands-on iPad demo area that will allow attendees the opportunity to run through self-paced PLM demos at their own speed.
  • Theater-style demos that will be scheduled during lunches and networking breaks where attendees can view business process flows working in real-time.
  • Meet the Experts dedicated time for attendees to ask specific questions to our product experts

5. Visit with our PLM Partner Community

Our partners play an important and significant role within the Agile PLM community. We have a number of our top partners that attendees will be able to meet and mingle with including:

  • Event Sponsors: Inspirage and KPIT
  • Premier Sponsors: Accenture, IBM and Kalypso

Views from the Value Chain: How Oracle Brought People and Supply Chains Together

Almost 2,000 business professionals attended the first annual Oracle Value Chain Summit in San Francisco this February, a unique event that united six supply chain disciplines: Product Lifecycle Management, Maintenance, Manufacturing, Value Chain Execution, Value Chain Planning, and Procurement. But what was equal to its value in breadth, is what the conference offered in depth. So to get the details beyond my own account of PLM at the Summit, I asked my fellow value chain colleagues to share their perspectives.

Here’s what they had to say…

EAM/ALM Maintenance Summit 2013
By Stephen Slade, Sr Director Product Marketing Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Asset Lifecycle Management

The 7th Annual Maintenance Summit, held at the Value Chain Summit was a resounding success according to early polling. A kick-off presentation by David Loesch, Sr Director of Oracle’s Competitive Intelligence Unit provided a unique perspective on Emerging Trends in Asset Management. The standing-room only crowd extended into the hallway as David spoke of the new disruptive technologies entering the maintenance arena.  Attendees were overwhelmed with the overall content and number of sessions offered across the 3 major EAM/ALM pillars: E-Business Suite (EBS), PeopleSoft and JD Edwards (JDE).  Executive speakers from a variety of major maintenance organizations in several leading vertical industries presented their best-practices and case studies on their successful journeys in reliability, effectiveness and cost containment. Sample representation of speakers from ESCO, Graymont Mining, Smuckers, National Express, Oregon Health & Science Univ, Wells Dairy, Simmons Foods, Barrick Gold, Facebook and Energy Alloys are a few of the companies presenting. The second day of the Summit concluded with a free-form meet-the-experts panel where participants were able to ask specific product questions on applications use and function to the enlightenment of the audience. The week concluded with a series of Customer Advisory Boards and Product Line Focus groups to improve the product understanding and use in the market.

Manufacturing Summit 2013
By Stephen Slade, Sr Director Product Marketing Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Asset Lifecycle Management

The 5th Annual Manufacturing Summit brought together users, experts, partners, developers, analysts and strategy professionals with a unique focus on manufacturing operations. Abe Eshkenazi, CEO of APICS, presented the leading manufacturing pillar session on Talent Development and Retention in Manufacturing that included a unique view on globalization and the impact of emerging economies. Tracks were held for Discrete and Process Manufacturing as well as the JDE suite. Speakers from a variety of leading blue-chip firms shared their challenges, vision and solution on how they evolved their operations into world-class organizations. A lean Manufacturing panel was hosted by Stephen Slade, Sr Director of Supply Chain Applications Marketing that included key seasoned participants from Emerson, Gentex and Cummins. They each described their five to ten year Lean roadmap and the progress made on that journey. Specifically, they focused on the new best practices tools and Oracle technologies that they employed to allow them to be more competitive in today’s global marketplace. One quote that summarized Cummins lean effort was the remark by Steven Harbor of Cummins “that our processes are so lean and solid that our competitors buy from us,” meaning that Cummins has achieved a world-class operating position, that it has created a true competitive advantage – but only for today.

Value Chain Execution Summit 2013
By John Murphy, Sr Director Value Chain Execution Applications Product Marketing

Capitalizing on past Logistics event successes, the VCE focused attendees came out in force to learn more about Oracle’s market-leading suite of supply chain execution applications. Through interactive sessions in Transportation Management, Warehouse Management, Distributed Order Orchestration, Fulfillment, Mobile Logistics applications, Order Management, Configurator and other focus areas, customers and prospects caught a glimpse of the future of supply chain execution applications.

Also, with a strong showing of partner representatives, the VCE portion of the summit proved valuable for those looking to augment VCE services or applications. A special thanks to the VCE pillar and track sponsors which included IBM, Loftware, CSC, Eminent Group, Zebra and others.

Looking forward to seeing many of you at the OTM SIG event in Philadelphia in July.

Value Chain Planning Summit 2013
By Paul Homchick, Sr Director Value Chain Execution Applications Product Marketing

The first ever Oracle Value Chain Planning summit, which took place as part the early February Oracle Value Chain Summit in San Francisco, was a blow-out success. Over two hundred Oracle VCP customers attended. There wasn't a meeting room large enough, so the VCP pillar sessions were presented in the Grand Ballroom. Oracle VCP partners were also out in force in San Francisco, with Inspirage as an overall event sponsor, and AVATA, Bristlecone, Trinamix, Oliver Wight, Hitachi, and Nexinfo as track sponsors. And many Oracle VCP customers told their stories. Timex talked about the benefits of Integrated Business Planning, while executives from Acroni Steel won the distance traveled award, flying in from Slovania to tell about their success with Oracle’s VCP tools.  Additionally, Pharmavite, Power Integrations, Teva Pharmaceutical, Smiths Medical, Emerson Micro Motion, Cisco, Qualcomm, Motorola Mobility, and Zebra Technologies participated in session presentations. The week wrapped up with a meeting of the Oracle VCP Customer Advisory Board where attendees learned of the new features planned for future releases of Oracle VCP, and were able to provide guidance. In addition to the formal sessions, ample time was provided to wander the demo floor, and to network with colleagues. Everyone I talked with was enthusiastic about attending next year’s event. And, though it may seem difficult, I'm certain next year will be even better.

Procurement Summit 2013
By Dan Ashton, Director, Procurement Marketing

Procurement was a hot topic at the first Oracle Value Chain Summit. The General Sessions consisted of discussions around key trends impacting procurement organizations along with overviews of Fusion Procurement, Spend Analytics and Supplier Hub. Throughout the Summit, roadmaps and Procurement product strategies were presented for E-Business Suite, Peoplesoft and Fusion. During the Procurement track sessions, Self Service Procurement, Strategic Sourcing and Contracts were covered in depth detailing customer experiences and benefits.

Land o’ Lakes shared their real life experiences in implementing Oracle Fusion Procurement. They discussed the initiatives that drove their decision to move to Fusion and benefits achieved, along with best practices and lessons learned. In addition PwC presented with their Oracle customer AutoTrader.com. Plus, Oracle partners Enrich IT and c-Three announced their merger now as an end-to-end provider of integrated SaaS Oracle procurement. During their session they reviewed their Source-to-Settle solution plus services.

Thank You!

Clearly, all of us are extremely appreciative of everyone who supported the first annual Oracle Value Chain Summit, regardless of your product focus area. We’re honored to see our community’s enthusiasm and humbled by our customers’ resounding successes and eagerness to share their stories in forums like this among their peers. Please take a moment to browse the publicly available presentations, join the virtual community on LinkedIn, follow our new Twitter handle @OracleValChain, and contact your Oracle sales representative if you have any questions or feedback about the Summit. Several attendees have already shared their thoughts (thank you!), and we plan to incorporate key improvements next year. Hope to see you all then!

Agile PLM Highlights from Oracle OpenWorld 2012

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Oracle OpenWorld this year, either in person or virtually (thanks for tweeting #oowplm)!  From customer presentations to after-hours networking opportunities, there was a lot to see and do during the entire conference.

Sessions
It was our pleasure to feature several customer speakers during our PLM sessions at OpenWorld from such companies as Starbucks, Coca-Cola, Facebook, Eli Lilly, and many more.  Each had a unique perspective to share and fascinating insight into how they successfully leverage Agile PLM to facilitate profitable innovation, protect brand integrity, streamline operations, manage compliance, launch faster, etc.  For example, during the Product Value Chain keynote session, CIO Chris Bedi of JDSU shared how they implemented Agile PLM to support business imperatives around rapid innovation, centralizing product information, collaboration, and eliminate the “Excel gymnastics” required to obtain global portfolio visibility. In just 120 days after implementing, JDSU employees reported significant improvements around product record management, new product introduction, engineering collaboration and more, which created a better work environment to enable critical innovation. I could write on and on about the almost 20 sessions! So to spare yourselves, please visit launch.oracle.com/?plmopenworld2012; it’s a curated selection of PLM presentations from the OpenWorld Content Catalog and available on-demand. Enjoy!

Agile Innovation Management
During OpenWorld, we announced an exciting new addition to the Agile PLM applications called Innovation Management that redefines the industry’s scope of product lifecycle management.  Our broad vision of complete enterprise PLM for the entire Product Value Chain already broke new ground by helping organizations extend PLM disciplines downstream by connecting product design to commercialization processes; now we are helping executives look farther upstream in the early innovation phases to ultimately close the gap between strategy and execution that so commonly nags innovation initiatives.  More on this coming soon so stay tuned!

Unique Networking Opportunities
We know it can be challenging during OpenWorld to find time to productively connect and network with your industry peers, so we hosted an Agile PLM “Birds of a Feather” networking brunch for the second year in a row.  At a fine restaurant close to Moscone we hosted nine tables, each with only ten seats to encourage active conversation.  Furthermore, guests could select from a list of predetermined table topics sponsored by a specialized PLM partner to guarantee – even more so – that they were seated with like-minded company and optimizing their time at the conference.  Everyone enjoyed the opportunity to easily connect with other PLM users during OpenWorld in a more casual setting.

What’s Next?
Thank you again to all who joined us!  If you haven't yet, mark your calendar to join us for the next Oracle Agile PLM conference at the Value Chain Summit in San Francisco, February 4-6 in 2013!  We’ll have 40 sessions of PLM content in four tracks. Don’t miss it! You can sign up to be notified when official registration opens by visiting www.oracle.com/goto/vcs
