Workforce Management Applications vs. Spreadsheets, Really?

A few weeks ago, I was on a call with 10 customers and before I began to share with them my 20 minute spiel on the value of Workforce Management, I asked everyone what solutions they were using today for their time entry, absence management, and scheduling processes.  The answer you might find shocking.  70% of them were just using “spreadsheets.”

Then just last week, I met with yet another group of customers, and low and behold the same response.  I thought to myself, “What is going on?”  These are not just small little mom and pop shops here.  These are big time, money making, global organizations.  And these are all organizations who’s bottom line is significantly impacted by whether or not their employees deliver superior customer service or high quality products with high productivity.

As I asked why they were not using workforce management applications to manage these processes, the responses I received were maybe not so surprising.   One customer said, “We had a product we used for scheduling, but it was too complicated, so we don’t use it anymore.  Now we just figure it out manually in a spreadsheet.”  Another customer said, “Well, we’ve been looking for a solution and haven’t been able to find one we like and I didn’t know Oracle had anything to help me out with that.”  Another customer said, “We don’t think it’s that important to our business so we just track absences in spreadsheets”.

My first thought was, we need to step up our marketing of our Workforce Management Applications.  My second thought was that while I like using spreadsheets just as much as the next guy, there’s just some things that spreadsheets can’t resolve.  The customer using spreadsheets to schedule, said it takes her 9 hours to plan out what the schedule will be for her employees for the next month.  And this is for just one location of many.

After I explained the benefits of using a workforce scheduling solution that is easy to use, an absence management solution that tracks all kinds of absences, and an integrated time management solution that helps monitor adherence, their eyes lit up with enthusiasm to learn more about Oracle’s Workforce Management Applications.  There are so many ways that having the right automated systems in place can help manage your workforce properly and impact the bottom line.

The proof is out there.  Just check out some of these great white papers from from Axsium Group, Oracle’s newest systems integration partner for our Workforce Management Applications.  For every step that you can automate in your workforce management business processes, you can potentially save millions of dollars.  Bye bye spreadsheets.
