Re-Thinking HR and HR Technology

These are exciting times for HR and HR technology. The continuing rise of the Cloud for HR applications and the many benefits that the Cloud brings, are encouraging many organisations to rethink their HR technology strategies. For some organisations, a wholesale move of all HR applications from on-premise to the Cloud makes the most business sense – for instance BG Group are moving all of their HR applications to the Oracle HCM Cloud, while other organisations like Nationwide Building Society and Standard Life are adopting a hybrid, transitional model with a mix of Oracle on-premise and Cloud HCM solutions.
Our changing business environment and business priorities are strongly influencing the next generation of HR solutions. We work in truly service centric economies, where organisations must focus on taking care of customers and employees. According to the new Gallup State of the American Workplace report, when organisations “successfully engage their customers and their employees, they experience a 240% boost in performance-related business outcomes compared to an organization with neither engaged employees nor engaged customers.” Taking care of your employees is business critical.
To satisfy both organisational needs and employee expectations, modern HR solutions need to be:
- Talent centric
According to PWC’s latest Annual Global CEO Survey (2014), Talent Strategies are CEOs’ number one priority requiring focus and change. This suggests two things, the C-suite:
- Has an increased desire to drive value from HR as the focus moves from table stakes HR operational efficiency to talent;
- Are not happy with the talent status quo. Modern HR solutions must focus on facilitating organisational talent strategies.
Social media and collaboration has transformed many of our private lives and will inevitably transform the way we work. According to CEB’s Breakthrough Performance in the New Work Environment, Executive Guidance for 2013 paper, 67% of us report an increase in collaboration in the workplace. Modern HR solutions must reflect this trend with embedded social collaboration in people processes.
The same CEB paper, reports that 76% of workers see an increase in working with data as necessary to get their jobs done. This is an area where HR has been historically weak with many people decisions more based on intuition than any statistical analysis or insight. As the amount and quality of the information we have on employees increases, modern HR solutions need to better reflect this desire for evidence based decision making in HR related matters.
Finally, employees now expect a consumer grade application experience in the office, with access to corporate HCM applications at any time, on any device and any location. Modern HR applications need to be easy, intuitive and suit the way we work.
