US Women's Gold Medal Soccer Players Draw a Crowd

Abby Wambach and Kelley O'Hara of the US Women’s Gold Medal Soccer were on hand at Oracle OpenWorld on Wednesday afternoon to sign mini soccer balls and meet fans. And where there are celebrities, there’s sure to be a line.

And this one was long…extremely long, winding around one corner of Moscone South for the entire time Wambach and O’Hara were present. “Good grief,” said one man, pondering his decision to cue up. But plenty of people were ready to wait and wait. Why? Most had a similar answer:

“I’m getting one for my daughter.”

“I’m getting one for the daughter of a friend”

“I’m getting one for a friend’s daughter who plays college soccer.”

“My partner’s daughter would love one.”

“My daughter will have a fit if I don’t get one.”

“I have no idea who they are, but I know my daughter will.”

“I’m getting one for my grandmother. No, I’m only kidding. I’m getting one for my daughter.”

“This is my second time in line. I have two daughters. And I can’t go home with only one autograph.”

“My wife would kill me if I didn’t get one for my daughters. So I guess I’m getting one for my wife.”

In each case, they received a smile, a “Thank you for waiting” or “Thank you for stopping by” and a signed mini soccer ball from Wambach or O'Hara.

The two players also appeared at the Oracle Customer Appreciation Event Wednesday night on Treasure Island.
