Sharecat Enables Oil and Gas Supply Chain Management with MySQL Enterprise Edition

Sharecat provides supply chain management solutions to oil and gas operators, delivering an innovative collaborative environment which includes the manufacturers' equipment catalogues and technical information. The products provide visibility and fully validated content to all parties in the plant lifecycle. Based in Norway, the company has offices in the UK, Australia and the United States.

Challenges

  • Deliver Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) based solutions with a Web interface to oil and gas operators. The database powering the applications needed to store and deliver fast access to a large amount of information, including all components necessary for the construction and the maintenance of oil rigs. Product catalogs are updated on a continuous basis with manufacturers, product numbering, data templates and documentation. They contain information captured over an 18-year period, including products no longer in production but still installed at thousands of assets.
  • Implement an enterprise-class database to power the supply chain solutions. They had initially been developed with a Microsoft Access back-end, and had outgrown its capabilities.
  • Maintain a low Total Cost of Ownership over time.

Solution
  • Evaluated several databases and selected MySQL to power the Sharecat applications. The team particularly valued its performance and scalability in addition to the opportunity to reduce database TCO by 90% compared to Microsoft SQL Server. "MySQL allowed us to build a professional solution to serve our global clients at low cost. It fulfilled our requirements extremely well."  said Tom-Kenneth Fossheim, Chief Technology Officer.
  • The Sharecat products run in a Windows-based virtualized environment. MySQL Replication is used both for High Availability and to scale-out read operations.
  • While MySQL 5.5 is currently in use with a mix of InnoDB and MyISAM tables, the company plans to upgrade to MySQL 5.6 and solely rely on the InnoDB storage engine.
  • Sharecat subscribed to MySQL Enterprise Edition in order to take advantage of the MySQL Enterprise Monitor and MySQL Enterprise Backup functionalities. They also wanted to be able to rely on Oracle's MySQL support team. "We’re very happy with Oracle’s MySQL support, the engineers are really good, and we get fast answers." said Eirik Andersen, Database Administrator.
  • The software is currently hosted in-house, but the company is evaluating the opportunity to migrate to a public cloud in order to benefit from increased flexibility and reliability, and to further reduce costs.

"MySQL just works, it’s a very stable, high performance and cost-effective database. In addition, we get great service from Oracle."
Tom-Kenneth Fossheim, Chief Technology Officer, Sharecat

MySQL Powers AlSego's Solutions

Based in Luxembourg, AlSego is an Independent Software Vendor delivering Web, e-Commerce and financial applications including:
  • A Rapid Application Development (RAD) and Business Process Oriented (BPO) Web Server Platform.
  • E-payment and e-banking "Plug & Play" solutions.
  • Archiving solutions for the banks' SWIFT data.

AlSego counts some of the largest banks in Luxembourg, Belgium and Switzerland among its clients and partners.

Challenges

  • Supporting multiple database platforms for its products' master repositories generated a relatively high number of technical support incidents as end-users did not always master the various technologies involved. This in turn increased costs for both customers and AlSego, and negatively impacted the customer experience.
  • The company wanted to offer its clients turnkey solutions delivering the desired results out of the box, without requiring significant tuning for each new and different environment, nor an expensive and complex infrastructure.
  • The database underpinning the AlSego applications needed to deliver very high performance and reliability, paramount criteria for financial applications.

Solution

  • Decision to standardize on one database for all its products' master repositories in order to cost-effectively deliver the best customer experience. Customers would get a turnkey solution, optimized to deliver outstanding performance out of the box. Additionally, they would only have one company to turn to should they encounter any issue.
  • Evaluated several databases and decided to standardize on MySQL based on the following criteria:
    • Features: Among many others, stored procedures, views and triggers were essentials, and MySQL had all the needed features.
    • Ability to handle large volumes of data: e-banking solutions generate a significant volume of transactions and related data, and some data may need to be archived for over 10 years.
    • Performance: Financial institutions have typically been very pleasantly surprised and delighted by the MySQL performance during Proofs of Concept.
    • Flexibility: MySQL demonstrated the fairly unique ability to deliver excellent performance in different environments with minimal and predictable configurations changes. Additionally, when compared to other databases it did not require an expensive infrastructure to deliver the needed performance and scalability.
  • AlSego’s e-banking solutions are typically able to handle millions of system transactions per day, and store up to a Terabyte of data in large banks.
  • Developments and tests for the AlSego products integrating MySQL are often conducted on either Linux or Windows platforms, while production environments tend to also include UNIX-based or Mainframe-based platforms, running for example on Oracle Solaris or IBM zOS.
  • MySQL enabled AlSego to deliver solutions that were simpler to use and faster to implement, while reducing the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of its customers.
  • To make it even easier for its clients, AlSego is now evaluating the opportunity to integrate MySQL more deeply, embedding it within its core solutions.

"MySQL is one of the most mature and stable database products on the market. It is clear that Oracle understands the need to continuously develop the database, adding new features and making it a better solution for its various and different customers." Marc Van Oost, CEO, AlSego

Buongiorno Relies on MySQL Enterprise Edition to Power its Mobile Services

Buongiorno is known in the worldwide mobile ecosystem for developing and managing paid applications and content that help consumers get greater enjoyment from their mobile devices.

Buongiorno’s strategic goal is to deliver directly to consumers around the world a broad portfolio of content & services on all their personal devices, exploiting social and location based propositions, and letting telecom operators be in control of the billing. With direct connections to more than 130 telecom operators in 25 countries, over 10 years’ experience and a team of 600 professionals, Buongiorno makes the mobile internet experience happen for consumers globally. Buongiorno’s web apps brands include Gamifive, MuchGossip, Fingerbooks, Appsfuel HTML5 Marketplace, Winga, Play.me and the mobile payments solution Cashlog.

Challenges

  • Rely on a database delivering high performance and scalability to power Buongiorno’s mobile services. The database additionally needed to be very easy to use in order to rapidly launch and easily manage new fast growing applications.
  • Implement an effective monitoring solution in order to increase Dev-Ops productivity and focus resources on strategic operations.
  • Maintain a low Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for its infrastructure, both initially and over time.

Solution
  • Selected MySQL to power Buongiorno’s platform.  The team especially valued its performance and scalability for mobile applications, including the ability to very quickly open and close connections to the database. MySQL was moreover extremely easy to use, and would allow the company to cost-effectively scale-out, adding more database servers at low cost to fuel its growing business.
  • MySQL instances are hosted on virtualized servers. The architecture currently consists of over 50 MySQL database instances including:
    • Over 40 “MySQL chains” as illustrated in the below diagram with circular replication between master and slave servers (or "Master Backup") to ensure High Availability, and replication to a second slave server for reporting purposes.
    • Over 10 additional similar MySQL chains without replication to another slave server for reporting needs.

  • More than 8 TB of data are stored in the MySQL master servers (excluding the replicas). The application handles:
    • Over 50,000 queries/second
    • Over 15,000 transactions/second
  • While several MySQL versions are still in use in the platform, all servers are being migrated to MySQL 5.6 in order to take advantage of the latest features.
  • Standardized on MySQL Enterprise Edition. Relying on the MySQL Enterprise Monitor Visual dashboard to monitor all MySQL databases at a glance. Automated alerts enable the Buongiorno DBAs to immediately focus on potential problems and fix them before they impact the system.
  • Leveraging Oracle’s MySQL Technical support to assist their team. "We turn to the support team whenever we don’t know the answer, they are extremely good and really responsive" said Carmine Giordano, DBA Manager.
  • Planning to use MySQL Enterprise Backup, that now integrates with their central company backup solution.

"MySQL is an excellent database to deliver mobile applications; it’s really fast, reliable and easy to use. I highly recommend MySQL Enterprise Edition; the latest version of the MySQL Enterprise Monitor is extremely useful and saves us a lot of time and efforts." Carmine Giordano, DBA Manager, Buongiorno
