New SMS Record for Noruz

Satellite broadcast of Jame Jam TV Network reported tonight that Iran broke its own SMS record on the first day of the Persian new year.

Mobile users in Iran sent 118 million SMS text messages on March 21st, 2007.

This is quite a large number when compared to other, more active mobile markets. I believe the largest operators in the U.S. have gone past an average of 200 million SMS text messages per day. (I do not have the current records for these operators but I believe the number I've given here may still be in the ballpark. If you have a public reference for more current records, please add it in the comment section.)

Comments:

Ofcourse you know that this is for nourooz, the average number of text messages in day is about 28x10\^6 messages. You may find these links interesting: http://www.isna.ir/Main/NewsView.aspx?ID=News-782669 http://www.isna.ir/Main/NewsView.aspx?ID=News-884053

... and also thanks again for the estimates for average daily messages ... I wonder if you based your average dailies on the published values from the reports whose links you provided or through some other means ...

In any case, and for those who cannot read the Persian reports you've pointed to, here is the summary:

T he first report (first URL) puts the annual number at 153 billion messages. The other report (the second URL) notes that majority of the messages are exchanged among students who use it for entertainment and for exchanging jokes. This report is based on Shirin Zaboli's journalism thesis. Zaboli's other findings are also interesting. Women send more SMS than men. Past use of SMS increases its use in the future. Users prefer it because of cost and speed. Singles use SMS more than married people. (I'd like to read Zaboli's thesis if you happen to have a copy.)

I got my statistics from those links, I checked it with some other news and I think it is precise to a good extent. The wonderful point is that the number is growing exponentially. Just as an example, the number of SMS messages in the whole Norooz period(about 10 days) in 2005 was 50x10\^6, this number jumped to 400x10\^6 for the same period in 2006 and this year(2007) it is 118x10\^6 just for the first day of Norooz! I just searched a little in some iranian news agancies and I got this figures. I am afraid I have not Zaboli's research.
