Following recommendations by Chief Data Officer, Usama Fayyad, Yhaoo has been expanding Yahoo Reserach to include a number of economists with research focus on Internet services---everything from dating to search services---reports The Wall Street Journal. Much of the economics of Internet services still remains unexplored. Good economic analysis of services can help people avoid all kinds of erroneous assumptions regarding pricing levels to permission patterns.
Another good starting place to explore economic research on Internet services could be professor Hal Varian's research papers. (The WSJ article I mentioned above says Varian collaborates with Google.)
