Oracle VM Template: Solaris 10 10/09 vs. Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5

Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Solaris 10
Oracle VM Templates for Oracle Solaris 10 can be used to rapidly provision a new virtual machine running Oracle Solaris 10 10/09 OS on x86/x64 platforms

I noticed these differences.

  1. Solaris can be directly downloaded on to OracleVM server itself using wget or curl. OEL requires browse with Javascript support.
  2. Fully Virtualized vs Paravirtualized
  3. Solaris is 'unconfigured'. When you boot it, you should answer several questions such as DHCP vs fixed IP, etc.
  4. Solaris is GUI login enabled. To disable it, run this as root.
    # svcadm disable svc:/application/graphical-login/cde-login:default
  5. 'root' ssh login is not allowed on Solaris.
    # vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    //  PermitRootLogin yes
    # svcadm restart /network/ssh
