Stripers

Few words can get the heart racing, the mind dreaming, and the feet itchy to get moving away from the office as these.   The stripers are running!

At least once a year, no matter where I live in the world, I try to get down to Rock Harbor Charters on Cape Cod in Massachusetts for a trip out with Captain Dick Clark on "The Flying Mist".

Next week, good weather or not, we're after striped bass.   And from what we hear, the fishing is good this fall, as we all hoped it would be!

As an avid fisherman, I know the simple facts of life :

A Bad Day of Fishing
Is Better Than
A Good Day of Work
:-)

Yup, the stripers are running!   We'll see you soon, Captain!

A Touch of Botox

Over the past two months, I've visited our Guillemont Park UK and Prague Czech Republic offices, gotten MUCH more deeply involved in our IBIS and BigAdmin programs, prepped for and attended a SW wide project review, been to over 100 other meetings, and basically have been working my buns off.

Today, while searching for a Sun 800 phone number, I managed to pop my head up long enough to notice that our externel website, www.sun.com, has had some work done!   Wow!   I especially like the nice crisp clean About Sun page.

I was also pleasantly surprised to quickly & easily find the website where ANY OF US can sign up to received various Sun NewsLetters.

Nice work, folks!

I believe the BigAdmin website will also be signing up for a touch of botox in the near future.   And I'll be there, assisting, holding the tray, whatever...   Stay tuned....   :-)

Shell Scripts on BigAdmin

Earlier today, I found myself wandering around the BigAdmin website again.   While browsing, I soon found myself reading shell scripts.

One section, BigAdmin Scripts, invites contributors around the globe to submit their own shell scripts for others to browse, pull, adopt, and use.

I personally still use the Bourne Shell, used to teach Shell Programming classes, and have been known to write shell scripts to do everything from automagic website creation to UNIX system crash dump analysis.   How cool to find a place to share some of those creations!

BigAdmin

This week, my Director volunteered me onto an existing project team.   I had no idea what I was being volunteered into, but what the hey, Sun pays me to do all sorts of interesting things...

At the first meeting, I learned that the team has the awesome charter of helping maintain one of Sun's coolest web based resources for system administrators:

I remember viewing BigAdmin a long time ago and was impressed to see how much it has grown over the years.

So what's my role in BigAdmin going to be?   I'll be helping identify additional technical whizzes in Solaris engineering who will continue populating BigAdmin with technical goodies.   However, don't be surprised if you see me contributing directly as well!

So what can you do on BigAdmin?

You can:

o   Figure out how to do something specific with your system
o   Browse tons of stuff
o   Read news
o   Find out about new products
o   Download software
o   Diagnose problems
o   See what's up in the forums
o   Ask questions
o   Get training
o   Read documentation
o   Get support
o   Contribute
o   and more

If you haven't browsed BigAdmin lately, try it out!   Take it for a test drive!   Get connected!

Don't have time to browse today?   No problem.   Subscribe to the BigAdmin Newsletter and we'll deliver the news to you every month.

PS - Engineers in my org.... if you're interested in contributing, COOL!   Let your managers know.     :-)
