GlassFish v3

GlassFish v3 is the first complete GlassFish v3 release (see Overview of GF 3). This release builds on the early access release of GlassFish v3 Preview to fully implement the new Java EE 6 specifications in a commercially supported product. GlassFish v3 Prelude does not support clustering nor state replication.

GlassFish v3 was released on December 10th, 2009 (launch information), as "GlassFish v3" (community) and "Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server v3" (commercial). Development of the releases in the GlassFish 3 family continues in parallel with continued support releases in the GlassFish v2 family.

We strongly encourage users interested in the "v3" functionality to go directly to the latest version of the GlassFish 3 family. Users and customers interested in clustering and state replication should use GlassFish v2 until these features show up in GlassFish 3.1.

GlassFish v3 Preview

GlassFish v3 Preview is the second GlassFish v3 pre-releases. This release provided an evolution of the modular principles used in GlassFish v3 Prelude using the new Java EE 6 specifications. This release was an early access release distributed just before JavaOne 2009. GlassFish v3 Prelude does not support clustering nor state replication.

GlassFish v3 Preview was released on June 1st, 2009, in parallel with some support releases for GlassFish v2 family. We strongly encourage users interested in the "v3" functionality to go directly to the latest version of the GlassFish 3 family. Users and customers interested in clustering and state replication should use GlassFish v2 until these features show up in GlassFish 3.1.

GlassFish v3 Prelude

GlassFish v3 Prelude is the first of two GlassFish v3 pre-releases. This release proves the basic modular principles of the GlassFish v3 family, it is based on the Java EE 5 specifications and it is supported. GlassFish v3 Prelude does not support clustering nor state replication.

GlassFish v3 Prelude builds on top of the Apache Felix OSGi runtime, offers great extensibility, support for Rails and Grails, developer features (fast startup, retain sessions across redeploys, NetBeans and Eclipse tooling, ...), an embedded API, Comet support, a brand new IPS-based update center, RESTful web services, a preview of several Java EE 6 features, and much more.

GlassFish v3 Prelude was released on November 6th, 2008, in parallel with the evolution of the GlassFish v2 family. We strongly encourage users interested in the "v3" functionality to go directly to the latest version of the GlassFish 3 family. Users and customers interested in clustering and state replication should use GlassFish v2 until these features show up in GlassFish 3.1.

SJS AS 9.0 (GF v1) - Public Release

GlassFish v1 was released at JavaOne 2006, May 2006, a year after announcing the project. GF v1 is based on the same code base as the JavaEE 5 Reference Implementation; the RI is a specific snapshot in time of GF that is provided by the JavaEE 5 Spec Lead (Sun) to the JCP, and thus GF v1 was the first AppServer that was JavaEE 5 compliant. GFv1, like later versions, was in the different JavaEE 5-based SDKs available from Sun (download page).

GlassFish v1 builds on earlier versions of Sun's AppServers, and also includes Oracle's contribution of TopLink Essentials to provide the JPA 1.0 implementation. It is Open Source and fully Free Right-to-Use. GF v1 does have some of the enterprise features of GF v2, like cluster support, but it is nevertheless a very useful release in production as shown in the early testimonials in our Adoption Stories.

The Sun distribution of GlassFish v1 is Sun Java System Application Server 9.0 and there is full commercial support for it; see GFv1 Overview.

The Java.Net distribution of this release is still available at GFv1 b48. I can't find a public link to the corresponding build at Sun.Com.

The latest public release of the GF v1 branch is GlassFish v1 U1 but we encourage new users to start directly with the latest GlassFish v2 public release. See Overview of GFv1.
