Corporate Cultures

An organization's corporate culture has a very strong impact on the success of an organization through the values, beliefs, work ethic, camaraderie,  decision making, behaviors and interactions of people.  Through my career I have seen a number of different corporate cultures.
  • Worked as an internal consultant at IBM and then with IBM business partners for six years.
  • Worked as an Oracle DBA and was an internal consultant at Oracle for five years.
  • Worked at Trubix a privately owned technical education firm.
  • Worked at MySQL for almost two years.
  • Worked at Sun Microsystems for almost a year.

So I found it almost ironic the rumors of IBM's interest in buying Sun Microsystems. :)  This would have taken me full circle if I had ended up back at IBM.  It's amazing when I look at the different cultures in these organizations.  Each organization listed above has been extremely successful and yet achieved incredible results with completely different corporate cultures.

Comments:

were they really rumors ?
Anyways can you write a post about SUN's culture and how it differs from other.

As for the rumors, we have to be careful what we say in public. If you see me at an Oracle, MySQL or Java conference I would be more than glad to sit down and have a beer with you about the different cultures at these organizations. However, I'd have to be really careful how I describe a companies culture in a blog.

IBM' Culture is more successful than Sun's.

Sun is going to die, slowly but definitely. because the people don't like sun, and don't like Sun's Culture.

John,

I can definitely appreciate your perspective. No one can deny IBM's great success. That's also why I did not want to give my opinion of a company's culture because no matter what the culture is there will be someone who does not like that culture.

On Sun's side, Sun has shown incredible innovation and their culture has had a lot to do with that. The ability to work from home and work in a virtual company has also contributed to employee success.

In any company or culture it is always best to try and focus on what you as an individual like about a company and make that culture work for you.
