Setting Up and Running Summary Advisor on an Exalytics Machine (Oracle-by-Example)

If you are running Oracle BI on an Exalytics machine, you can use Summary Advisor to identify the aggregates that will increase query performance. Summary Advisor intelligently recommends an optimal list of aggregate tables based on query patterns that will achieve maximum query performance gain while meeting specific resource constraints. Summary Advisor then generates an aggregate creation script that can be run to create the recommended aggregate tables. Aggregate tables reduce query times by storing precomputed results for queries that include rolled-up data. This tutorial covers steps to set up, configure, and run Summary Advisor on an Exalytics machine using TimesTen database as a target for storing aggregates.

You can find the Oracle By Example (OBE) in the Oracle Learning Library (OLL). The content in OLL is available to all customers, partners, and employees.

How to remove Analyze option from the report in OBI 11.1.1.7.0 ?

Que) How to remove Analyze option from the report in OBI 11.1.1.7.0 ?

Ans)

You can change the properties of a dashboard and its pages. Specifically, you can:

  • Change the style and description of the dashboard

  • Add hidden named prompts to the dashboard and to its pages

  • Specify which links (Analyze, Edit, Refresh, Print, Export, Add to Briefing Book, and Copy) are to be included with analyses at the dashboard level. Note that you can set these links at the dashboard page level and the analysis level, which override the links that you set at the dashboard level.

  • Rename, hide, reorder, set permissions for, and delete pages.

  • Specify which accounts can save shared customizations and which accounts can assign default customizations for pages, and set account permissions.

  • Specify whether the Add to Briefing Book option is to be included in the Page Options menu for pages.

To change the properties of a dashboard and its pages:

  1. Edit the dashboard.

  2. Click the Tools toolbar button and select Dashboard Properties.

The "Dashboard Properties dialog" is displayed.

  3. Make the property changes that you want and click OK.

OBI already has a caching mechanism in presentation layer and BI server layer. How is the new in-memory caching better for performance?

Question:

OBI already has a caching mechanism in presentation layer and BI server layer. How is the new in-memory caching better for performance?

Answer:

OBI Caching only speeds up what has been seen before. An In-memory data structure generated by the summary advisor is optimized to provide maximum value by accounting for the expected broad usage and drilldowns. It is possible to adapt the in-memory data to seasonality by running the summary advisor on specific workloads. Moreover, the in-memory data is created in an analytic database providing maximum performance for the large amount of memory available.

Exalytics:Is RTD going to be on the Exalytics box in the future ?

Q: Exalytics:Is RTD going to be on the Exalytics box in the future ?

A:RTD is not currently planned to be certified for Exalytics.  The Exalytics architecture is not ideal for RTD (RTD requires more processors than memory), and there are no existing or planned optimizations to run RTD on Exalytics.

Is customer allowed to change IP address of Exalytics box by himself?

Question:

Is customer allowed to change IP address of Exalytics box by himself?

Answer:

Changing the IP address or host name of an Exalytics machine is not officially supported, or recommended.Weblogic, EM has dependency on the IP address and may not function properly after the IP address is changed. You may have to reinstall the entire apps after you have changed the IP address.

Weblogic, and the OBIEE install do have some dependency on the networking configuration but typically that is the hostname, rather than the IP. So, this means that it should be possible to change the IP address of the host, but NOT the hostname. However, if the network was not setup properly and in Enterprise Manger you see references to IP addresses rather than the hostname then there may be a problem such as that described above

In order to change the IP address, we would recommend that the procedure is carried out by someone familiar with network configuration, they could either use the exalytics network config script or directly edit the various network config files appropriate to the network port that the IP is being changed on.
