Oracle Exalytics Patchset 3 Software is Now Available

Oracle Exalytics Patchset 3 Software is Now Available

The fourth major release of Exalytics software and associated certifications is  now available for use with Exalytics X2-4 and X3-4 engineered systems

What’s New

The new patchset includes a full software version stripe for Exalytics that has been tested together and is delivered as one Engineered System.  Exalytics customers can now access significant enhancements across the whole complement of Exalytics software.

  • New Software improvements of Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite 11.1.1.7. This release has more than 200 enhancements across the suite and many features targeted exclusively for Exalytics, such as extremely fast ‘hot-data’ recommendations from the database cardinality estimate feature, and BI Publisher high-volume bursting that can enable the generation of an extremely large number of personalized reports and documents for business users in time periods that were previously not achievable. In addition, Essbase, a component of Oracle Business Intelligence Foundation Suite, benefits from Flash memory and expanded main memory available with Exalytics X3-4 or with hardware upgrades for Exalytics X2-4. Multiple cubes can run concurrently with up to 25X improvement in load times and 9X improvement in calculation times when compared to the previous release running on Exalytics X2-4 without Flash storage.
  • New release of TimesTen In-Memory Database 11.2.2.5 enhancements and new functionality for Exalytics, including a new TimesTen import utility for analyzing data in the Oracle Database and importing to TimesTen in Exalytics with recommendations for optimal data types, columnar compression, and indexes, enhanced parallel inserts for compressed tables and data loading time reduction. These capabilities speed up data load times. In-memory join optimizations in TimesTen result in up to 3x improvement over regular workloads in BI Applications, for instance.
  • New Software Certification of EID 3.0. Exalytics now supports the new, major release of Oracle Endeca Information Discovery, which enables rapid insights into structured and unstructured data including social media, websites, content management systems, raw text from documents, email, and more. By correlating this data to the structured data in data warehouses and enterprise applications, users will be able to more accurately manage data and meaning form unstructured sources, ultimately driving better business decisions and innovations.
  • New release of BI Applications 11.1.1.7.1.  This major release features new content across all the BI Applications, two new analytic applications—Student Information Analytics and Indirect Spend Planning—and new use of Oracle Data Integrator and GoldenGate.
  • New Software Certification of EPM 11.1.2.3 Exalytics now supports the latest version of Oracle Hyperion EPM.  In addition to taking advantage of all of the new user experience, integrations and functional enhancements Exalytics now supports 11.1.2.3 versions of Hyperion Planning, Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management and connections to Hyperion Financial Management.
  • Support for Hyperion Planning 11.1.2.1: Hyperion Planning customers with EPM 11.1.2.1 deployments can now take advantage of Exalytics without needing to upgrade to EPM release 11.1.2.2 or 11.1.2.3. With an existing deployment of Hyperion Planning 11.1.2.1, customers can now leverage the performance and scalability of Essbase deployed on Exalytics.  This certification will open up a much broader set of opportunities for up-selling Exalytics into the Hyperion Planning installed base.
  • NEW Exalytics In-Memory Software.  Software optimizations specific to Exalytics, and not available on generic hardware or other Engineered Systems, are now packaged as part of a new priced item, Exalytics In-Memory Analytics.  This new line item provides rights to use Summary Advisor, Essbase Flash optimizations, BI Publisher enhanced bursting for Exalytics, TimesTen for Exalytics unique features, and other capabilities unique to Exalytics In-Memory Machine.

Note: Hyperion Financial Management (HFM), of course, is not supported on Exalytics yet. What’s new is a direct connection from Exalytics via ADM driver to HFM 11.1.2.3 for enabling OBI based analytics.  Hyperion Planning, Hyperion Profitability and Cost Management, and Oracle Financial Management Analytics are all increasingly popular on Exalytics.

Exalytics: Loading Data From Oracle To TimesTen

There are three primary use cases for Exalytics/OBIEE/TimesTen:

1.    Normal BI use case

2.    DataMart use case

3.   Operational Data Store (ODS) use case

In terms of how TimesTen is used (1) is the most common case (maybe 70-80% of customers) and (2) and (3) are very similar to each other.

For (1), only aggregates are stored in TimesTen. These aggregates are recommended by the BI software based on the various reports and dashboards that have been configured there, the queries that BI generates as a result of them and the way the data is organised in the backend database. BI generates scripts to compute these aggregates and to load them into TimesTen. This is all completely controlled and managed by the BI software. We should not be getting involved in any recommendations relating to data loading for this aspect (since it is all under the control of BI and is closely coupled with who BI is setup and used). Any 'advice' for customers in this area is the job of BI SCs, BI consulting and maybe BI support.

For (2) and (3) a subset of the backend database DataMart / ODS is typically loaded into TimesTen. This usually consists of one or more very large 'fact' tables plus a larger number of significantly smaller (but still often large in absolute terms) 'dimension' tables. The decision as to which tables need to be moved into TimesTen and what subset of the data is needed is still really driven by BI considerations and has to be carefully evaluated on a case by case basis. We should not get involved in that aspect; that is firmly the province of BI SCs / consultants to assist the customer with. Once the customer already nows the exact set of tables etc. that they want to move into TimesTen then we can potentially provide some advice, though again it should be in conjunction with the BI folk to ensure we are all aligned on the best option(s) for a given use case.

For initial data loading (initial population):

If the backend DB is non-Oracle then potential options are:

1.    Manual; create compatible TT schemas and create tables in TT, unload data from backend DB in a format that ttBulkCp can read, load data into TimesTen using ttBulkCp.

2.    Use OBIEE. This has some limited data loading capabilities.

3.    Use Oracle Data Integrator (if the backend DB is supported). This requires a license so it is not a free option.

4.    Use Oracle Datawarehouse Administration Console (DAC). This also requires a licence so is not a free option.

If the backend database is Oracle 10gR2 or later then there is an additional option:

5.    Use ttImportFromOracle to perform type mapping, data compression etc. and generate TT compatible DDL files to create the tables in Oracle. Use the (new) parallel data load feature of ttImportFromOracle (as from TT 11.2.2.5.0) to load data to TT tables quickly and with high throughput.

For Oracle DB backends in general (5) would be the recommendation (since it is free and flexible) but customers may of course choose any of these options.

For incremental refresh loads:

Typically, once the initial population has been done then from time to time (might be hourly but more often daily or less frequently) there is a need to add new data to the TT datamart / ODS. Usually this is simply adding new data but sometimes it may also require updating existing data. Due to the limited capacity of memory there will also need to be a mechanism to periodically purge 'old' data.

This is a more complex area and as of today we do not have any really good solutions (but they are begin worked on). Post 11.2.2.5.0 we hope to have some better options (but that is internal information not for external consumption at present). The two main challenges here are:

1.    All queries that originate from BI use table level locking for performance reasons. Thus they are incompatible leith any concurrent DML against the tables being queried.

2.    What does it mean anyway, in business terms, to run report and queries against data  that is changing (given that TimesTen does not support the same query consistency models as e.g. Oracle DB).

So today options for incremental refresh require either:

a)    Some BI application downtime to allow the TT tables to be refreshed. This maybe can be selective if there are different sets of tables that can be refreshed together.

b)   Some form of double buffering whereby two copies of all relevant tables are maintained in TT. App runs against copy 1 while copy 2 is refreshed then app switches to copy 2. Later copy 1 can be refreshed and app switched back to copy 1 afterwards. Bi can support this but the memory requirements in TimesTen often make it impractical.

The 'tools' that can be used for this are pretty much the same as for initial loading…

For non-Oracle backend DBs:

1.    Manual; Unload data from backend DB in a format that ttBulkCp can read, load data into TimesTen using ttBulkCp. If anything other than INSERT is needed then may need top use staging tables and PL/SQL processing in TimesTen etc.

2.    Use Oracle Data Integrator (if the backend DB is supported). This requires a license so it is not a free option.

3.    Use Oracle Datawarehouse Administration Console (DAC).

DAC is free and supported for customers with license of any of the BI Applications.

If the backend database is Oracle 10gR2 or later then there is an additional option:

4.    Use the ttLoadFromOracle building to load data directly into the TT tables, or into staging tables for further processing using e.g. PL/SQL. The LoadData.sql script generated by ttImportFromOracle could be used as a basis to construct suitable scripts.

How To Pass Presentation Variable To the Title View Using Dashboard Prompt?

Presentation variable does not pass correctly in title view when all values are selected in the dashboard prompt.

For eg, when all values are selected,the title is displayed as @{xxxxx}

When you select a value from the dashboard prompt , the title is reflected correctly with the selected value in dashboard prompt.

This issue can be reproduced at will using any version of OBIEE. The test case using OBIEE 11.1.1.7 is demonstrated below:

 Steps:

Section 1: Create the report:

1.1.Create an analysis using sample sales lite rpd with following criteria:

  • Time: Per Name Year
  • Product: Brand
  • Offices: Department
  • Base Facts: Revenue

Add a Filter ->Product: Brand and make it 'Is prompted' (we will be making Brand as the presentation variable)

1.2.Click on Result and Edit the Title

1.3.In the 'subtitle' field , Enter the name of presentation variable, say @{Brand}

1.4.Save the report as 'Presentation var'

Section 2: Create the Dashboard prompt.
2.1 Create a New Dashboard Prompt (New->Dashboard Prompt)
2.2 Add a Column Prompt: Product ->Brand
2.3 Expand the Options and Set a variable to 'Presentation variable' and Enter 'Brand' in the field below.

2.4Save the dashboard prompt as 'PVprompt'

Section 3: Create the Dashboard Page

3.1 Create a new board and name it as :PVDashboard
3.2 Drag and drop the Dashboard Prompt created from Section 2 into the dashboard page
3.3 Drag and drop the report created from Section 1 to the dashboard page
3.4 Save the Dashboard page and run it.
3.5 When there is no value selected in the dashboard prompt, the subtitle is displayed as '@{Brand}'

3.6 When you select a value for Dashboard prompt : say 'BizTech', it is displayed correctly as BizTech as shown below:

To fix this issue, Do the following:

Edit the Title view from Results tab and add a default value for All selection for eg, 'All Brand' in this case: @{Brand}{All Brand}and Save the title.

Save the Dashboard PVDashboard, and Run it .Now the Presentation Variable is displayed correctly when you dont select any value for the Dashboard prompt.

Exalytics:Is Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 11.1.1.7 certified with Exalytics PS2 (1.0.0.2), or any other Exalytics release?

Question:

Is Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition (OBIEE) 11.1.1.7 certified with Exalytics PS2 (1.0.0.2), or any other Exalytics release?

Answer:

OBIEE 11.1.1.7.0 is a full product release and is not currently certified with Exalytics.  It includes many product enhancements and the installation/upgrade procedures are significantly different from the install method for a minor patchset, such as OBIEE 11.1.1.6.5.

The Oracle Exalytics Development team is actively working on certifying OBIEE 11.1.1.7.  An announcement will be made when the certification process is complete.  Certification details are available in the Exalytics Certification matrix posted here.

Thanks,

Sareesh

OBIEE 11g:Excel Connectivity Using ODBC Drivers

This blog describe the method to connect Excel to BI Server using ODBC.

For this you dont need to use the Analytics. You can use Excel to create the report by connecting to BI server using ODBC Datasource.

Two steps to achieve this are:

  1. Create a system DSN
  2. Create the report using Microsoft Query.

Step 1: Create  the system DSN

1.Go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Data Sources (ODBC)->System DSN

2. Select Oracle BI Server and Click Add

3.Click on Finish and enter a name for your DSN and enter the BIServer name and click finish

Now your BI Server DSN Configuration is done.

Step 2. Create the report using Microsoft Query.

1. Open the Excel and Click on Microsoft Excel->Data->From Data Sources->From Microsoft Query

2. Select the DSN name you created above and enter the credentials to log in to BI Server.

3. A new screen to choose column will appear.

4. Drill down on the dimensions and select the required tables as shown below:

5. If you get a message like below, click on OK

6. Clicking OK will take you to the screen shown below:

7. Click on Add Tables icon from the menu. This will allow you to select the tables that you want in your report.

 For example,

7.1. In this case we are using Sample Sales lite rpd and we will add the fact table Base Facts (click on Add)

7.2. Base fact will be added to Microsoft query. Drag Actual Unit Price from ‘query from …’ section to the Result pane header.

(Note the difference in screenshot from step 6)

8. Close the window for ‘Microsoft Query’. Now ‘Import Data’ wizard will open.

9. Select the type of table you wanted. (In this example we have used the pivot table report)

a.Drag Product to Drop Row Field Here
b.Time to Drop columns Field Here
c.Actual unit price to Drop Data Items here.
d.The report will be generated in excel like below:
