Last week, we did a major announcement on Oracle Storage, with the upcoming next generation of our SAN Storage. In my last blog entry I talked on the characteristics that were needed today to enable the Real-Time Enterprise: Real-Time, Always-on, At Scale, Secure. All those characteristics have been built-in in the FS1. So let me go back on some of the unique features that we put into the FS1 to make that happen.
Business Prioritization up to the storage
To deliver the most efficient I/O subsystem, not only did we design the FS1 with a multi-tiers Flash and Disks model, we also took a special attention on the auto-tiering capabilities to be inline with the Business requirements. As such the algorithm that we use to move hot data to the most appropriate storage insures that we are moving the data relevant to the application or Database, and not stale data, not useful for the Business, with a very fine grain control (640k). This is complementary to what we already provided, with the unique I/O prioritization based on Business Value, where we re-order the I/O to return the most important first, and not in the usual first-in/first-out model.
All of those unique functions not only contribute to the performance you are expecting to get real-time. It also contribute to scale at an optimal cost per performance. We also continue to offload the replication engine so we can scale properly as your data grow while maintaining your disaster recovery capability.
High-Reliability for your Data
The system is designed with not single point of failure, and extremely fast controller failover. Combined with Oracle MaxRep replication engine, we can secure your data in multiple sites (one-to-many or many-to-one), synchronously or asynchronously, up to the application level protection, by providing a consistent recovery point rollback capability.
Enabling Storage at Scale
FS1 has been designed to scale from the ground up, at an optimal cost per performance. By leveraging the unique software features, co-engineered up to the Database and application level, we are uniquely position to manage your data growth. As such we deliver flash performance at a fraction of the cost. And also offer the unique compression mechanism co-engineered with the Database, which enable us to reduce your data by a ratio going from x5 to x10 to x50 depending on your data sets. We are also offering unique configuration templates which enable you to configure the storage per type of application workload, reducing your operation cost even when your data and applications landscape is evolving.
Securing your Data efficiently
As I said previously, security is paramount and mandatory especially in a Cloud multi-tenant environments. And it is why we took a particular attention to equip the FS1 with the capability to be split into dedicated domains. Adding also the support of T10 Protection Information, which prevents from silent data corruption.
