Oracle: your Software Define Network provider ?

Our Engineered Systems and Cloud are all over the place, and I am engage on many customer projects around those technologies both on-premise or in an hybrid public/private mode. And one of the key under laying piece is the network. Oracle is not well known as a network switch provider... But should... as this is a critical asset that seats in your data path insuring flexibility, performance and security. For Oracle it is a key piece to build our Cloud, our Engineered Systems and that we are integrating up to the chip level (see latest announcement at Hot Chips 27 conference).

Attributes of a “Cloud-Enabled” Datacenter

  • Software Defined “Everything”: Converged, Modular, Agile Infrastructure with Dynamic Provisioning
  • Data Center Security: Enhanced security in Converged Infrastructure and Fabric based solutions
  • Network Services in Fabric: Network Virtualization, Software Define Network (SDN)/Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Flatter L3 networks, Virtual Network Services, Multi-tenancy, Strong provisioning and management tools

Networking is the "converged" in Converged Infrastructure. Oracle SDN enables the creation of segregated, High-Speed L2 Networks and is complemented by Oracle SDN Virtual Network Services to deploy Virtual Firewalls, Routers and Load-Balancers "On Demand".

Software Define "Everything": Oracle Virtual Network Fabric and  Services

With Oracle Virtual Networking, we are drastically simplifying Datacenter network topology by converging your infrastructure and consolidating all your I/O (being Ethernet and Fiber Channel), with a fully dynamic provisioning capability of vNIC and vHBA up to your running Virtual Machines (VMs). This simplification focuses on removing unnecessary North-South traffic and optimizing East-West traffic between your VMs, with strong tenants segregation (PCI DSS compliant) leading to better performance and infrastructure secure consolidation.

With Oracle Virtual Network Services, we provide modular, highly scalable, network services, that can be instantiated by tenant, in an highly available and secured model. Those services, all delivered as a software VM, encompass Firewall, Load-balancer, Routing, VPN and NAT. They can all be daisy chain in a single virtual instance and are High Available with redundancy built-in using VRRP.

Unified management is delivered by using Oracle Fabric Manager, integrated into Oracle Enterprise Manager or OpenStack.

What's next: Enterprise IT and Telco Networks Convergence

We are now at a turning point where Network Core Services, thanks to Software-based Network Virtual Functions will be able to be supported by Enterprise IT... as long as the right platform including Software and Hardware can be delivered to sustain the 99,999% well known in Telco industry. What could we do without any network connections today: not much !
Building of our long experience as a Telco technologies provider encompassing Hardware and Software, we are now bridging both world of Enterprise IT and Telco Networks IT backbone infrastructure with our Netra Modular System Platform to support the deployment of any kind of virtual environment in a very secure and scalable architecture. As a design pattern we took the best of rackmount servers and blade chassis without the drawback: the time-to-deploy for Rackmount and the proprietary chassis for Blades.

Combining everything together, this is how it could look like to operate your Enterprise IT Datacenter, through OpenStack, leveraging Oracle Software Define Network and Virtual Services on top of our Netra Modular System:

If you are going to Oracle Open World 2015, starting October 25th, I invite you to look for the following sessions to exchange with our experts:

And of course, I will be happy to see you there or on twitter as well.
