I will soon publish my impression from a highly entertaining European Commission workshop on intellectual property rights and ICT standards on 19 November 2008 in Brussels, Belgium held at the Bedford Hotel, formerly a cotton mill. Since I attended yesterday at the Commission in Brussels, I am still patching up my notes. Here is a very first impression. These are soundbites from the workshop. Some caused laughter. Others were just strange. Others again did not necessarily have one clear interpretation. I will leave it to the readers to interpret them for now. Feel free to join the debate, web 2.0 style (and do let me know if I am misquoting somebody):
1.- A good patent search costs €100 K, Rigo Wenning, W3C.
2. - We do copyleft within our foundation, Yann Dietrich, LiMo Foundation.
3. - Can open standards be sexy?, phrase heard during the coffee break.
4. - Ex ante disclosure is fashionable, Heinz Dourek , Director-General of DG Enterprise in his introduction.
5. - Among the 4000 requests for appeals received by the US Supreme Court, they act on 100”, Suzanne Michel, FTC.
6. - Patent applications are on the sharp increase. It is likely that ICT standards will be covered by more patents, Tomoko Miyamoto, Senior counsellor, WIPO, speaker.
7. - I am not sure that Microsoft can be considered to be an SME, Amy Morasco, Microsoft .
8.- Cloudy computing is a new trend, Anne Catherine Lorrain.
9.- Non-standardized technologies promote interoperability, CompTIA leaflet.
10. - We have made certain statements, unnamed conference speaker.
11.- I do not speak on behalf of myself, Eduardo Gutentag, Chairman of the Oasis Board of Directors.
12. - Open Source is not a business model, Amy Morasco.
13. - OOXML is being implemented in Open Office products, Amy Morasco.
14. - IPR and standards is very complex. In fact, it is a very complex field, Harald Heiske, Siemens.
15. - SMEs are beyond the radar of patent trolls, Alexander Wurzer, SME speaker from NORMAPME.
16. - If you want to write a book, do so, and send it to us, Karel de Vriendt, Head of Unit, IDABC Programme, DG DIGIT (panel chairman's introduction about speakers time keeping).

One of the most active company during the swpat debate had received a threat letter from Acacia (well known patent troll), they didn't know how to react. It is a small swedish company as far as I remember.
And the same remark is also valid for iMatix, a small belgian company that had a project cancelled due to threats made by a patent troll.
