Video Training. What do you think?

There are 9 short courses (about 10 minutes each) on using My Oracle Support.
Have you tried watching them?
Did you just finish watching one of them? Provide us feedback!

They are packed with tips and tricks. The videos on specific "features" are recorded with a live account and no slides - and show you how to get the most out of My Oracle Support.

They are available from the Help menu, or choose from the topics here.
And because we do not have any feedback built into the videos, PLEASE do add your comments here, so we can improve the existing videos or provide additional training topics.

You can also use the Feedback link inside of My Oracle Support.
There are plenty of training options available, the video training is just one option. There are also leader lead classes, and even training in other languages.

These videos are only in English right now. They are closed captioned for the hearing impaired.

At least I know metalink has been replaced by Oracle Support.

Dave:

Personally I don't like video training; I'd rather have it written down any day.
1. It's often easier to understand text than a heavy accent, and presumably more so when your first language isn't English.
2. Little things about the way someone speaks can be very annoying, especially when you have to listen to it over and over. I had to listen to one webcast where every sentence was spoken as a question.
3. I can read faster than you can speak.
4. If I need to re-read something then it's easier to loop over a section of text until I get it than to loop over a section of audio.
5. If I need to find something it's easier to find text than audio, in the latter case you often have to listen to the whole thing over.
6. If there's loads of stuff that's irrelevant to me then it's easier to skip over text than to fast forward audio.
7. A webcast where the presenter is just reading the slides with no additional explanation is completely pointless. Just give us the slides.

As far as I can tell, video presentations/webcasts are good for ONE person only: the presenter, who doesn't have to type and can just speak. It may save the presenter a few minutes to do a webcast, but in a company the size of Oracle it must amount to thousands of wasted (listeners') hours.

Product Overview
I found myself clicking "forward" for most of this presentation, having already played with a majority of it.
slide 15: i like the message box, unable to communicate with server. Is that something you really wanted to show? =)

Overall, I have to agree with the other posters; this is not my preferred way to learn about something. I acknowledge the effort you guys put into producing this short video clips, and I appreciate the intent, unfortunately I question its worth. Just trying to be honest here.

I also was not a big fan of the static screen shots; the next little video has a live demo, which is much more appealing.

Why Use Configuration Manager
Your system is much faster than mine. =) However, I did notice that when the presenter peeked at the Health Checks, the bottom region (currently focused on init parameters) never finished loading before the presenter moved on. That spells "slow" to me as well. In fact, the presenter went back to the dashboard, then came right back to the same system, and it is obvious that all that data is being reloaded again. Not cached?

The PowerView section was interesting, but obviously only practical for larger organizations.

Installing Configuration Manager
There is no "forward" button, which is rather annoying.

I have issues with the OCM install; doing them en masse is a royal pain. I have about 30 hosts with an average of 3 homes each, supporting 220 databases. Running these manual steps for each and every single one is just not practical. I did write a script to do this, but why is such a script not provided? Why does OEM/Grid Control not do this? Additionally, I found that I hit a number of errors/issues when running them in a batch mode, which is something else that is difficult to monitor manually.

Richard Miller:

For some a "picture is worth a 1000 words". It is difficult to write explanation documentation to "show" a user how to do something. But we have tried to provide the same level of training within the Help system in written form. But if you would like to suggest another method to communicate the training, we should give it a look. I could post the transcripts, for folks to get a quick overview of what is in the class. Would that be useful?

Dave, have you tried any of our training? Did you learn anything?

Charles, we are working on performance on the back-end. The slowness is annoying to the development team too, so we know it can be an issue for you.

Please do provide more feedback, so we can adjust how we share training materials and the quality of the materials.

Manash:

Will anybody guide me regarding automated deplyment of the Product . In my enviroment there are 1000+ instances are runing with active/passive cluster, multiple oracle home. Can it deployed using Grid control. We are mainly concern with deployment in Active/passive cluster environment.

Thanks in advance.

Charles Schultz:

Manash, it is largely a manual process. We wrote a quick little script using a central server to deploy and install OCM on all hosts in our enterprise; it could easily be adapted for OUI silent installs as well. However there is no error checking, which is a bit of a bummer. That is why the script is "quick" and "little". =)

Like you, I am anxiously awaiting the time when GC will be able to do stuff like this.

Joseph Mako:

We have 3 DBAs supporting our Oracle instances and any one could open an SR. The OCM installations seems to indicate that only one person will see the info on their dashboard and only that person will be able to use that info to help open an SR. This could be a problem for us.

Hongyu Yang:

Personally I like the presentation. It did a good job showing the steps of installing OCM.

The CON for OCM is that we have to install it in each ORACLE_HOME. Why did you guys at ORACLE not integrate this tool into Oracle Enterprice Manager? You collect data from whichever database you connected to. Just a suggestion.

Abdel Gharzita:

This great demo - Clear, consise, and to the point.
Thanks you

Yao lei :

what a great idea to show the process in a demo video, i like it

Anonymous:

I like the video presentation very much . I suggest Oracle Should upload more training material with video presentation for different modules . Its easy to understand and knowledgeable.

I watch 2 videos one about the new "My Oracle Support" and another about installing the OCM on a unix box, and it was really helpful.
I discover them, I will watch more of this small training videos.

Jayaram:

It is helpful.

dale:

I liked the tutorial. I noticed that one person complained about no forward button. It's not needed, all you have to do is grab the slide bar at the bottom of the video with your mouse and you can move forward or back in video. The slide bar is great as you can forward / reverse right to the point you want.

Prasad:

Training video is clear and very much helpful. About tool we will comment after installation and used.

carrie ward:

Video demo was clear and straightforward. I enjoyed it and found it helpful.

Gaétan Dufort:

I just watched Installing OCM. I have mixed feelings about it.
It's a fine presentation.
One should keep in mind that it will not replace good documentation and the need to read it as well.
For instance, on instrumenting a database (installCCRSQL.sh), OCM Installation and Administration Guide (10.3.1) reports that it is already done in version 10.2.0.4 and above. One less step for me to install and configure OCM here.

richard.miller Author Profile Page:

Good point Gaétan.
The most common error when configuring OCM is instrumenting the database in older release. We are always trying to reduce the number of steps. To that end, there is also a new mass deployment tool, to help install OCM on a larger scale when you are ready. Look for it on the Collector page.

Cheers.

benparka:
