Out With the Old, In With the New

[July 16, 2008 Update: Apparently, the Firefox team isn't sitting around eating bonbons all day. They've just released Firefox 2.0.0.16, less than two weeks after 2.0.0.15 was released. The former may be safely used with the E-Business Suite.]

As a Firefox user myself, I'm pleased to see that Firefox 2.0.0.15 was released yesterday with thirteen fixes for security-related issues.

Firefox 2 logoPerhaps more significantly, Mozilla announced yesterday that Firefox 2 will be desupported in mid-December, 2008. As noted in ComputerWorld's article about this browser update, Mozilla supports previous Firefox releases for approximately six months after a major update.

When Will Firefox 3 Be Certified With Apps?

If the clock is ticking for Firefox 2, you obviously need to start thinking about upgrading your end-users to Firefox 3. We're in the final stages of our certification of FF3 with both Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12. I can't provide a release date for this certification yet, for the usual reasons. I can tell you that the certification is going well and is proceeding quickly.

You're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates on Firefox 3, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.

Hi Chan,

Thats a great news, although FF2 is getting desupported by mid Dec-2008, its not a problem at all since we have all downloaded FF3 and waiting to install it in office machines ;).

We are waiting to see FF3 in the compatibility list of browsers for Oracle EBS application 11i as well as 12i. However I noticed some problems of running Jinitiator and J2SE together in different tabs of FF2 and it gets crashed with Vista OS. For work around we are opening Jinitiator version in FF2 and J2SE in IE7.

I know JInitiator is no long longer supported but we experience more than JInitiator problems with Vista OS. Are there any updates on Vista OS front? When can we expect the EBS compatibility issues resolved with Vista without any work arounds?

Steven Chan:

Hi, Jithendra,

My first name is Steven.

Firefox does not support running two different JVMs simultaneously. You're welcome to log an enhancement request for this against Mozilla, but I suspect that the likelihood of their supporting this is slim.

I'd be interested in getting more details about compatibility issues that you've found between the E-Business Suite and Vista. Our certification tests have not found anything significant, so this certainly is worth investigating further. Please provide the details in a formally-logged Service Request via Metalink and drop me an email with the SR number. I'll have one of my certification engineers follow up with the Support Engineer assigned to your SR.

Regards,
Steven

Sure Steven, I will raise an SR on this particular scenario and post the SR number here for your reference.

Thanks a lot! Much appreciated!!

Hey Steven--My name is Steve, although my wife calls me Steven when she is annoyed with me. Can I simply say that FF3 rocks? You might be a lawbreaker in your company, and all your apps might not play nice with it yet, but it's simply a delight to use. Nice UI enhancements, and it's fast!

Hi, Steve,

I like FF3 a lot myself, although I'm encountering some focus-related issues with assorted websites. The perils of being on the leading edge, I suppose. Occupational hazard. I particularly like the extra speed and the way add-ons are handled now.

Regards,
Steven

Tianhua Wu:

I just upgraded to firefox 3. One nice surprise is that I can use it for both JRE and jinitiator with one setting. for FF2, I have to check "enable java" for JRE and uncheck it for jinitiator.

Steven Chan:

Tianhua,

Thanks for your feedback about Firefox 3. We're pretty encouraged by our cert tests so far, too.

Out of curiosity, can you confirm that you're still on EBS 11.5.10.2, and whether you've encountered any UI-related issues with FF 3?

Regards,
Steven

sean:

When will FF3 be certified with 11.5.10.2

Steven Chan:

Sean,

We're wrapping up this certification right now. I don't have a firm date for this yet, but you're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.

Regards,
Steven

Tianhua Wu:

Sorry, Steven, I was on vacation. I tried firefox 3 for both EBS 11.5.10.2 and 12.0.4. So far I did not run into any issue. But I do not use EBS as much as regular end users, I only use it for DBA works.
