A Peek Backstage

Our blogging hiatus is over and we’re back online. I’m delighted that Oracle’s cutover to our shiny new blogging system went smoothly. Kudos to our Oracle Asia R&D for all of their efforts in getting everything over the Rubicon, including your valuable comments and questions.

imageFor those interested in these kind of things, we’re now running on Six Apart’s Movable Type Enterprise 1.5  running on top of Oracle’s own Content DB.  Very cool stuff.  Things will get even more interesting later this year when we upgrade to Movable Type Enterprise 4.

Some Housekeeping, Alas

Google tells me that there are many thousands of inbound links into this blog. My blogging team and I are deeply flattered. Sally Fields’ now-immortal Oscar acceptance speech springs to mind.

If you’ve linked to this blog, I’m afraid that our conversion to our new system may trigger some housekeeping for you:

  1. If you’ve linked to my top page (http://blogs.oracle.com/schan), those links will continue to work.
  2. If you’ve linked to specific articles, links in this format will continue to work:

    http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/2007/03/20#a1303

    http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/2007/06/07

  3. If you’ve linked to specific articles with URLs that had department names in them, they might work:

    http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/newsItems/departments/patching/2007/06/07

Geek Explanation: Our excellent Oracle Asia R&D team that handled this blog migration has put a redirect layer from the old article URLs to Movable Type’s new URLs. However, articles with multiple departments (e.g. “Release 11i” and “Business Intelligence” generate multiple URLs, and it may not be possible to redirect all of them.

  4. If you’ve linked to specific articles that had special tags attached (due to our old UserLand blogging software quirks), these will likely still work:

    http://blogs.oracle.com/schan/2006/05/29?print-friendly=true

The bottom line:

Please check all of your inbound links to existing articles on this blog. It’s likely that they will work. If they don’t, you can always google the article to get the latest link. If all else fails, you can contact me directly for help, naturally.

And now, back to our regular programming…

And it also looks like the RSS feed http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/xml/rss.xml still works :)

Simon:

Just a thought about the new layout, would the subject be possible to have with bit bigger font?

Nothing major but easier to see :)

Steven Chan:

Simon,

Thanks for your suggestion; I was squinting a bit, too. Done.

Regards,
Steven

Ian Neal:

Since the bigger font, I find lines are now getting truncated on the blog.

Also your name on posts still links back to http://blogs.oracle.com/schan rather than your new URL.

Ian

Ian Neal:

Sorry the truncation only happens if you go to the main http://blogs.oracle.com/ page and then click on a recent blog entry from there - it opens in a frame within the main blog site instead of a new window/tab or the existing window

Ian

Steven Chan:

Hello, Ian,

Sorry that you're having trouble with our new blog. I've tested the flow you described (main Blog page, click on recent blog entry from there) with the following combinations:

- WinXP + IE 7
- WinXP + Firefox 3
- Mac OS X + Safari 3
- Mac OS X + Firefox 3

I can't reproduce this issue. Can you provide more details about your O/S and browser where you're experiencing this?

Regards,
Steven

Ian Neal:

Indeed it no longer seems to be happening so whatever was causing one of the links to use a frame has now been fixed.
