JInitiator 1.3.1.28 Certified with Apps 11i

[Sept 10, 2007 Update:  Jinitiator 1.3.1.29 has just been certified.  See this article for information about the latest certified Jinitiator release for Apps 11i.]

The E-Business Suite Release 11i has two interfaces:  a web-based model for modules like iProcurement and iStore, and an Oracle Forms-based model for our professional services modules like Financials.  Oracle Forms are Java-based and require a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) to be installed on end-user desktop clients.  Oracle JInitiator is Oracle's licenced version of Sun's JVM, and E-Business Suite Forms-based modules are certified to run with specific versions of Oracle JInitiator.

Latest JInitiator Version Certified

Our hard-working certification team has just announced the certification of JInitiator 1.3.1.28 with E-Business Suite Release 11i.  For details, see:
Replacing Oracle JInitiator with Sun's Native Plug-In

In case you missed it, we're still running an Early Adopter Program where you can evaluate replacing Oracle JInitiator with the native J2SE Plug-in from Sun.  This configuration has the potential to reduce JInitiator conflicts with other Java applications that require different Java Virtual Machines.

We're still accepting customer nominations for this Early Adopter Program.  For more program details, see:

Joe,Wow, this sure is a blast from the past.  The only official Oracle documentation I could find about Jinitiator's encryption level is an ancient FAQ from 1999:www.oracle.com/technology/products/forms/pdf/256629.pdf US export regulations on crypto technology have been relaxed since then, so I'm trying to find out whether Jinitiator encryption support was upgraded from 40-bit to 128-bit encryption.  I'll post details here as soon as I have something more concrete to share.Regards,Steven

Joe,Excerpted from Note 123718.1:<snip> Key Size Limitation of 512 bits for Oracle Forms 6i Server
Due to restrictions imposed by the United States during the initial development
of Oracle Applications Release 11i, rapid installs up to 11i.4 include the Export
Edition of Developer 6i. The result of this being that Oracle Wallet Manager
and Forms 6i Server supported a private/public key size no longer than 512 bits
and corresponding 40-bit client-server message encryption.
Since the original release of Oracle Applications Release 11i, laws concerning
encryption strength have relaxed, Developer 6i has gained an ?approved product?
status effectively removing the distinction between domestic and export encryption
and a key size of 1024 bits and corresponding 128-bit client-server message
encryption has become the recommended standard.
Bug 1365794
has been logged for this limitation of the Forms Server included with Release
11i technology stack.
Bug 1713616
provides details of a one off patch that can be applied to Developer 6i to upgrade
from the export to the domestic edition to gain the benefit of the improved
encryption levels that it supplies. This patch is required for any Release 11i
implementations that have been installed with RapidInstall versions 11i.3 or
earlier that would like to use the higher encryption levels supported in the
domestic version of the Developer 6I base. Any new implementations that have
been installed with version 11i.4 or later of RapidInstall will already incorporate
the domestic version of Developer 6i. (On NT 4.0 / Win 2000, any patch for 6I
will upgrade the export version to domestic). From Forms 6i patch 5 (6.0.8.14)
onwards, the domestic edition will be applied to all implementations.
If you are not sure which version of forms your install of Release 11i Applications
is using, you can check this by setting up the environment for the 8.0.6 ORACLE_HOME
and typing f60run. This will display a page of information to the terminal,
the first line of which shows the Forms Runtime version. </snip>If you're on 11.5.3 or earlier, the bottom line is that you can use Jinitiator with 128-bit encryption support by applying a few patches.  If you're on 11.5.4 and above, you already have 128-bit support.  If you have trouble patching your environment to support this, please drop me a line with your SR number and we'll get someone to help you with this.Regards,Steven

we app. Server , Oracle 10g On windows2000 server
& we use Jinitiator 1.3.1.28 on XP SP2 it working good , but we have vista dos'not work with Jinitiator 1.3.1.28 ?
it there any release work with vista
Thank You Very Much

Steven Chan:

Hello, Khalid,

JInitiator 1.3 is based on Sun JDK 1.3.

Sun JDK 1.3 does not work on Microsoft Vista. Sun has desupported JDK 1.3 and has no plans to make this version compatible with Vista. Therefore, Oracle JInitiator will not work on Vista. See:

Windows Vista + IE7 Certified with E-Business Suite - http://blogs.oracle.com/stevenChan/2007/11/windows_vista_ie7_certified_wi.html

The only supported option for Vista desktops is to run the native Sun Java Runtime Engine (JRE) plug-in. See also:

Regards,
Steven
