Diving Deep Into the Release 12 Techstack

Ivo Dujmovic is an architect in our hard-working Applications Technology Integration team.  We were lucky to get some of his time at OpenWorld 2006 this year, where he discussed the deep innards of the Release 12 technology stack.

Release 12 Techstack Overview: Overview of three-tier logical architecture for E-Business Suite Release 12, including the database, application server, and desktop tiers.

For the most comprehensive preview released so far on how the Release 12 technology stack will be architected and work, take a look at his presentation.  He covers:
  • Highlights of new R12 techstack components
  • New Application Server 10g (10.1.2 & 10.1.3) ORACLE_HOMEs replacing the 9iAS 1.0.2.2.2 O_HOMEs from 11i
  • Switch from JServ to Oracle Containers for J2EE (OC4J) for running servlets, Java Server Pages (JSP), and Enterprise Java Beans (EJB)
  • OC4J Deployment details, including replacements for jserv.conf and jserv.properties configuration files
  • New R12 filesystem layout, including the introduction of an Instance Home (INST_TOP)
  • New use of Oracle Process Manager & Notification Server (OPMN)
  • New Forms 10g deployment
  • Comparison of 11i and R12 environment variables
  • Discussion of relative benefits of Forms Servlet vs. Server (socket) mode deployments
  • Disabled mod_plsql in R12 (more about this in a later article)
  • Things you can do today to prepare for R12

Can't download the pdf. Sure about user/pwd?
Thanks.

Steven Chan:

Marzio, I recommend rechecking the password you entered.  Many people keep missing the "c".Regards,Steven

Steven, it's a funny thing - I've shared the news that mod_plsql is disabled in R12 with a few of our developers at JPL. We are using mod_plsql pretty heavily to extend our 11i environment. The reaction so far is one of denial and disbelief. In fact, several refuse to consider the possibility even after seeing Ivo's presentation slides (Isn't denial the first stage of grief?).

Just felt I should share what is certainly an interesting reaction.

Steven,

Both these presentations are very impressive & Self explanatory.

From my point of view I found below two points quite good

#Instance Home Vs Source Home

#New Shared file system with Oracle Config Home so that Appl Top and Oracle Homes Can be Read Only

Steven Chan:

Thanks for your comment, Atul.  I've passed that on to Ivo for you.Regards,Steven

Steven Chan:

Quite right, Floyd.  Now that we've announced this news at OpenWorld, I can go into more detail about this here.  I've just published this article to discuss some basic procedures for preparing for this change:Mod_plsql Not Supported in Release 12Regards,Steven

marzio:

Steven,
i was missing the 'c'... shame on me!
thanks a lot for your answer and keep up the good work!

Chris Balodis:

Steven,
Does this new architecture mean that Apps 12i no longer will require an x server (like VNC or Xvfb) to support reports/forms?
Regards,
Chris Balodis

Hi Steven - can you post a link to the 11i externalization presentation you resided over @ OOW? I forget the exact name of the session, so hopefully you remember what I'm referring to.

Thanks!

Steven Chan:

Hi, Dan,If you're thinking about my session on Oracle Application Server 10g integration, here it is:Using OracleAS 10g With The E-Business SuiteRegards,Steven

Steven Chan:

Chris,Quite right - there's no need for an X server in R12.  Our business intelligence teams have rewritten their content to remove those original dependencies.Regards,Steven

dukas:

can you explain what are the diffs between servlet and oc4j?
what are the benefits of oc4j in the R12 ?
