Oracle Critical Patch Update - July 2006

The Critical Patch Update for July 2006 is now available. Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information. It includes a list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities, and links to other important documents.

Today's Critical Patch Update also introduces a new and improved documentation structure for the Oracle products. This change was introduced to make it easier to access information that is relevant to specific product versions and operating systems. The advisory contains a link to more information about the new documentation structure.

It is essential to review the Critical Patch Update supporting documentation before applying patches, since this is where you can find important relevant information.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is available on the Oracle Technology Network.

The next four Critical Patch Update release dates are:

  • 17 October 2006
  • 16 January 2007
  • 17 April 2007
  • 17 July 2007

Steven,

I am asked to implement fresh 11.5.10.2+.
Requirements is to install Apps + OATG latest patches (have a list) + Functional patches (specified) + current CPU patches.

I started to gather information.
Note:372931.1 Subject: E-Business Suite Critical Patch Update Note

says that

-- CPU patches for Oracle E-Business Suite are not cumulative

that means that I have to go through All CPU Alerts and identify all OEBS CPU patches to be installed.
I read trough July 2006, April 2006 and there are 22 patches in my list so far (5 more alerts to analyse).

Can you advise if I am doing right things? Have I understood it correctly?

I just refuse to believe that to be on latest CPU level is that labour intensive task (to read all READMES to those patches, then identify dependencies, install all those in correct order etc.).

I think I am doing this analysis in wrong way. There suppose to be easy way of doing it.

Are CPUs included in any patchset? If no why Oracle doesn’t include single CPUs in cumulative updates?

Thank you in advance,
Yury

Steven Chan:

Yury,I can understand your frustration.  Patch analysis can be a long process, and if you're behind in applying the latest CPUs and Apps patches, this can be very time-consuming.In general:Critical E-Business Suite techstack fixes are included in the latest CPU.Critical E-Business Suite techstack fixes are also included in the latest E-Business Suite patchsets. For example, critical fixes in the latest July 2006 CPU are also included in the upcoming ATG Family Pack H Rollup 4.There are exceptions all three statements, of course. There are also some cases where the CPUs include previous content.  For example, Note 372931.1 includes this statement:Oracle E-Business Suite Technology Stack patch 5183582 (Technology Stack Components for Critical Patch Update Jul 2006) does include the previous CPU patch 5046719 (Technology Stack Components for Critical Patch Update Apr 2006).Regards,Steven

Steven,

You are right talking about patch analysis (and I 100% with you and totally understood that do you mean by that, as I did this job many times before), but there is one but:

- I am not talking about environment that has not been administrated of maintained properly and because of that we need to apply all those patches. I would understood if you would say that about my 11.5.8 environment there I was lazy enough and as a bad pupil didn’t do my home work (applying resent CPUs) and because of that I need to go thought that painful process of CPU patch analysis and apply straight from the beginning.

What I am not happy about is the fact that just after newest available 11i version installation I need to go through a process of analysis and apply 32-37 patches on top of fresh installation.

I wonder if it is that difficult for Oracle to create merge for those patches? Even I can do it :).

Thank you in advance for your answer,

Yury

PS I presume I can be wrong in my conclusions. If I am please point me there I am wrong.

>> For example, critical fixes in the latest July 2006 CPU are also included in the upcoming ATG Family Pack H Rollup 4.

Are they? Can you please point me any single patch which is included? According to the Metalink patch search there is no one unfortunately.

I presume that Metalink is not accurate in that context, but it doesn’t do my (Apps DBAs) live easer in CPU context. How we suppose to get to know which CPU is included in RUP4?

Please comment,
Yury

>> There are also some cases where the CPUs include previous content. For example, Note 372931.1 includes this statement:

The same note says:

=====================

With the exception <> There are also some cases
I would say differently:

There is the exception ...

Steven Chan:

Yury,To summarize the general theme of your last several questions:a. Critical Patch Updates don't include previous CPUs, and there's no detailed listing of included patchesb. The ATG Rollup 4 is cumulative but doesn't include a detailed listing of included patchesBoth of these observations are correct.  Some DBAs find it frustrating to apply a patch without this kind of detail, and I've passed your feedback on to the various teams involved.Even in the absence of that information, however, as long as you apply the documented prerequisites, you can be assured that your environment has the latest requirements for the latest certified configuration.Regards,Steven

Is that you are saying is that:

- OATG RUP4 includes July 2006 CPU patches

- installing fresh 11.5.10.2 installation and OATG RUP4 (+ all prerequisites listened in readme) I do not need to install any additional CPU patches

Steven can you please confirm that I didn’t misunderstand you.

Steven Chan:

Yury,No, that's too broad of a generalization, unfortunately. The safest policy is to apply all previously issued Critical Patch Updates, since they are not cumulative, and may include fixes not available in any other form.In addition, you should install the latest ATG Family Pack H Rollup 4.  The combination of these two actions will bring your E-Business Suite environment to the latest recommended configuration.Regards,Steven
