[Editor Aug 31 Update: References to Linux-specific patches 4241292 and 4576754 replaced with generic references]

I no longer think so but for emotional reasons I must keep on fighting a
holding action.

A Holding Action
Here's an attempt to help you decrypt and understand these version numbers.
To understand this baroque situation, you need to distinguish between:
- The Oracle Application Server 10g release, which represents the overall bundle that includes all underlying components like Single Sign-On, Portal, and Discoverer
- The underlying detailed Discoverer 10g version number, which represents the specific version for the current executable installed
- The version of Discoverer that you end up with after you've applied the interoperability patch required to integrate Discoverer with an E-Business Suite environment
Discoverer 10g Version 10.1.2.45.46C.
If you want to integrate this release with the E-Business Suite, you need to apply the appropriate patch listed in Note 351721.1 for your platform. This upgrades your Discoverer installation to:
Discoverer 10g Version 10.1.2.45.48.
Released in Oracle Application Server 10g Version 10.1.2.0.2:
Discoverer 10g Version 10.1.2.48.18.
If you want to integrate this release with the E-Business Suite, you need to apply the appropriate patch listed in Note 313418.1 for your platform. This upgrades your Discoverer installation to:
Discoverer 10g Version 10.1.2.50.05.
Yes, yes... I know what you're thinking. You might draw cold comfort from the fact that we enjoy this situation about as much as you do. At least now you're armed with the same cheatsheet that we use internally for tracking this information.

We Plan to Updagrade From 4 to 10g For Ebusiness. We don't plan to use SSO. But we would like to Login Only once For Ebusiness and Should be able to connect Discoverer Automatically . Is it possible to do it by using File based Infrastructure rather than DB based One? Is there any other benefits besides SSO for doing db based infrastructure? Please Advise.
Thanks

Raghu,It's possible to do this. See the Discoverer 10g Note 313418.1, Section 5, Step 1.6, Option A.The ability to use Single Sign-On for accessing your E-Business Suite environment is the primary benefit of integrating Discoverer 10g with a full OracleAS 10g infrastructure.Regards,Steven

And Steven, Discoverer Development has heard the anguished cries both internally and externally of these version number changes for the interoperability patches. It should be more consistent with other patching going forward.

Thanks For The Info. Yet Another Question Related To Discoverer. We Saw / Heard That Discoverer 4/4i Will Not BE supported From October 2006? What About The Modules That Use Discoverer Workbooks (Profitability Manager, Financial Intelligence etc) Will These Products Be Cerified For 10G? Should I be Psoting this in some another Blog Let me know.

Raghu,Desupport of Discoverer 4i also affects the E-Business Suite Intelligence content for that release. In other words, when Discoverer 4i is desupported, customers will have to upgrade their E-Business Suite Intelligence content to the Discoverer 10g versions, too. All existing E-Business Suite Intelligence content is already certified with Discoverer 10g, so you can upgrade to that release today, following Metalink Note 313418.1.Regards,Steven

Raghu,Unfortunately, the Support Engineer is misinformed. If you send me a private email with your Service Request number, I can ensure that the engineer doesn't misinform other customers. There are no provisions for continuing support for individual products like Profitability Manager when the underlying technology (i.e. Discoverer 4i) has been desupported. As stated in my article on Discoverer 4i desupport, your best (and only) option is to begin planning for your Discoverer 10g upgrade now.Regards,Steven

Thanks For The Update, Was Surprised to hear new module Profitability Manager Alone Will be Supported Even with 4i Viewer (When Asked Through TAr, As Per Support Analyst Through Metalink)

Hi Steven
You mentioned that by applying interoperability patch 4241292 "Discoverer 10g Version 10.1.2.45.46C" upgrades the installation to "Discoverer 10g Version 10.1.2.45.48".
Can you give some details (or links) about what are the differences between version 10.1.2.45.46C & 10.1.2.45.48 and whether we can export from 10.1.2.45.48 & import from 10.1.2.45.46C & vice verca.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, Gaurav,The README for patch 4241292 includes a list of bugs fixed by that patch. You can safely assume that these bug fixes are on top of 10.1.2.45.46C.As a general rule, you should be able to export from an earlier Discoverer release and import into a later release. In other words, later releases should be backwards-compatible.The opposite is not always true -- that is, you cannot export from a later release and import it into an earlier release. This may be possible in some cases, but I wouldn't advise doing this with critical environments.Regards,Steven

Concerning the interoperability patch 4576754, this is a Linux only patch, and there are others that reference the other major platforms. When I look at the readme for this patch it says that this is only for SSO and can only be requested if a certain bug or set of bugs has been uncovered.
I have a client who had already enabled SSO for their Portal running on 10.1.2.48.18 who yesterday also attached their Discoverer to E-Business Suite. Previously their Discoverer was connecting to a data warehouse. We are seeing no issues and SSO is being correctly applied. Therefore, I must assume that whatever bug is lurking has not surfaced here.
Can you comment then as to whether the patch should ALWAYS be applied because the patch does not say this?
Best wishes
Michael

Thanks for the comment, Michael. I've revised the article with platform-generic patch information rather than specific pointers to patches 4241292 and 4576754.Patch 4576754 and the patches for other platforms listed in Note 313418.1, Section 5, Step 1.6.2 are the latest certified patches to support Discoverer interoperability with the E-Business Suite. Earlier patches might work for various scenarios, too, as you've learned from your customer, but the latest patches allow authenticated SSO users to create private connections to SSO-enabled E-Business Suite databases with Globally Managed usernames (i.e. users in Oracle Internet Directory). This is in addition to the more-common scenario of connecting to Apps workbooks from the Application Navigator, which uses the existing ICX session to authenticate a user.Your client might not need this functionality, but may benefit from other bug fixes packaged in the same patch. Following our general strategy for Discoverer patches, we always recommend the latest patchset that meets the broadest set of customer requirements.Regards,
Steven

Hi Steven
I think I understand :-)
The only cause for concern for me is that you say you recommend the latest patchset which is great, however the patches are locked down and only available if a non-specified bug has been encountered. Therefore do you have a listing of which generic patches should be applied and how one goes about getting hold of one of the recommended patches when they require a password.
Best wishes

Hi, Michael,Sorry -- perhaps I should have been a bit more verbose in my reply. I'll restate this slightly differently, to convey our general approach and policy around Discoverer patching in E-Business Suite environments. Our official E-Business Suite + Discoverer 10g integration documentation (Note 313418.1) lists the latest set of Discoverer 10g patches that have been certified with the E-Business Suite. This represents the Applications Technology Group's official recommendations for Discoverer patches required for use with the E-Business Suite. If you encounter other Discoverer 10g bugs, Oracle Support may recommend additional Discoverer patches. Some of these patches may be distributed on a controlled-basis (ie. with password protections). If a patch isn't listed in Note 313418.1, it has not been certified by the Applications Technology Group to work with the E-Business Suite. Given that we haven't tried these new patches, we can't predict their effect on your E-Business Suite integration. As such, you should apply those patches only if there's a mission-critical reason to do so. From a Support perspective, if you one of those patches breaks your E-Business Suite integration, Support and Development will work together to determine the best path forward. Possible outcomes may include:A recommendation to back out the patchA new patch that doesn't break the E-Business Suite integrationA workaround for the issueOver time, those patches are collected into larger bundles and incorporated in later Discoverer 10g releases. Some of those later releases are certified with the E-Business Suite. Once that certification is done, our official documentation (e.g. Note 313418.1) is updated and republished with the latest set of recommended patches.Based on your discussions with other Discoverer users and your customers, do you feel that this warrants a formal article on my blog?Regards,Steven
