Important Changes to Oracle MetaLink

E-Business Suite sysadmins know that all of the good technology stack-related documentation is on Metalink.

Oracle MetaLink is about to undergo a few important changes.  If you haven't already planned for them, you need to act now to avoid being locked out of MetaLink inadvertently:
  1. Ensure that your MetaLink account is associated with an active Customer System Identifier (CSI) number in your profile.  For details, see MetaLink Note 361177.1.

  2. Reregister your MetaLink account with your current email address.  Old Metalink userids (e.g. "JoeUser") are now being replaced with email IDs (e.g. "joe.user@company.com").   For details, see "Important Changes Coming For Your MetaLink Login ID - Please Read"

For Oracle readers:  This change affects Oracle employees, too!
And, yes, I'm acutely aware of the irony here.  If you get locked out, you won't be able to access the Metalink resources needed to reenable your account.  If that happens, just call Oracle Support directly.

Paul Murgatroyd:

Hi Steven,

I am a little worried about the change to an e-mail userid based system. I have had the same Metalink account now since before MetaLink was even generally released, and I have taken this userid with me from job to job by just updating the CSIs attached to my account.
Now it would seem that my userid is going to change to an e-mail address, which of course will change over time.
Does this mean our userid will change every time we update our e-mail address, or are we going to get in the ridiculous situation where the e-mail address we use now will be stuck with us forever?
Also, what happens to those who have multiple MetaLink accounts set to a shared e-mail address so that a whole team can monitor all Metalink updates?

Cheers,

Paul

It might be worth giving the MetaLink team some feedback on this. Log into Metalink and click the 'Feedback' link in the upper-right corner or the screen. As for your question about multiple accounts, I'm not a Metalink specialist, so I'm just going to reprint an item from the FAQ on this:<snip>
In this situation, each user will be required to use the same email address and password, as their login and once logged in, will be asked to select which account they wish to use for this session of MetaLink.

An example may be the best way to illustrate this:-

An existing customer has 3 MetaLink user accounts (fredx, maryz and bertk) sharing the same email address (dba@email.com).

After this login change is applied to production MetaLink, maryz is the first of the three users to login to MetaLink After maryz has entered her password, she will be asked to confirm that her new email login will be dba@email.com, and her new system generated password will be automatically emailed to dba@email.com.The next time that maryz logs in to MetaLink, she will be required to use dba@email.com as her username and the new system generated password.  She will also be required to change her password.

When the other two users (fredx and bertk) log into MetaLink for the fist time (eg after the change is applied), they will login with their current respective user names (fredx and bertk), and when prompted for the new username they will use DBA@email.com and the password they will enter is the one that maryz has changed it to when she logged on again after she converted her old username to email id of dba@email.com. Then they are prompted to enter a short description for their account (eg. if they want to change it from their previous username as it will default to). Note: This description may be changed later by selecting "profile" link for the user.

From then on - when any of the three users logs into MetaLink, they will be presented with a list of the three accounts and to choose which account they want to use for this session.

All their existing MetaLink functionality, including SR history and reporting, or any personal settings or privileges that they previously had associated with that account, will be retained. This is simply a change to the login id.</snip>Regards, Steven

Steven Chan:

The Metalink team's FAQ states that existing MetaLink functionality, including SR history and reporting, and any personal settings or privileges previously associated with that account will be retained.Mind you, it wouldn't hurt to make a note of these things prior to doing the cutover.  Regards,Steven

Murali:

will our bookmarks be migrated??

Steven Rebello:

I wonder why Metalink had to take this route of all. They are depending on the first user to loging as the user who would control the account. For a Metalink login that is shared across development teams, this would create a pain for the admin. If someone from the team goes in first and changes the password and profile information to his/her email address, the rest will get locked out :(

Couldnt they have just mailed all the admins or users and asked them to set the email addresses via a one-time link?

That's an interesting suggestion, Steven.  Not being a member of the Metalink team, I can't say whether this was considered.  You might wish to log in to Metalink and send them your thoughts -- click the "Feedback" button in the upper-right corner of the screen.Regards,Steven

Riddhi:

Hi guys...

Was searching for some info on metalink and stumbled across this discussion... seems like the right place to ask what i am looking for.... :)

Well, we are a team of three, with different metalink accounts (and different corresponding mail ids... and same CSI).

What i want is to know that, is it possible that the updates for the replies to SRs are visible to all 3 of us in our inbox-es???

Right now, if Mr. A has logged the SR, the updates are recd only in Mr. A's inbox..... i want all 3 of us to receive the updates. so if one day A does not turn up, we ll still know that his request has recd some reply.

It will be really helpful for us if this works out. :)

Steven Chan:

Hi, Riddhi,

Thanks for your comment. I don't have a lot of visibility into Metalink's operations, but I've passed your suggestion on to that team. Who knows? Maybe this will be incorporated as an option into a future upgrade to Metalink.

Steven

abdul wahab:

HI, my administrator by mistake registered with a wrong email address on the metalink site, now we are not able to open the account, any new registeration requires administrator approval. How can oracle depend on an email address without verifying the email address, anyone who does a typing mistake while typing the email during the first registration, we will be in trouble and will never be able to access the metalink again, if u re register it will say the information will be send to administrator who first registered now if you dont have the administrator account because you typed in a wrong email address and the password was sent to that email which does not exsits you can never change it. you are lost. The lost password option again sends the password to the email address .. Atleast you should verify the administrators email address.

Steven Chan:

Hi, Abdul,

I'm sorry to hear that you've hit obstacles with your Metalink registration. I'm in EBS Development and I'm afraid that I do not have any visibility into Oracle Support's Metalink registration process.

Your best bet might be to call Oracle Support directly and speak with an Oracle Duty Manager to get this straightened out.

Regards,
Steven
