64-bit Support for the E-Business Suite

[Oct 15, 2007 Update:  Added 64-bit platforms certified for Release 12]

[Sep 15, 2006 Update:  Clarified minimum requirements for 9iR2 and 10gR1 configurations.]

[May 24, 2006 Update:  This post has been revised with a clearer explanation of our certified configurations for 64-bit platforms.]

Here's a certification question that seems to recur in waves corresponding to hardware vendor announcements, namely, "Does the E-Business Suite work on 64-bit platforms?"

Itanium Chip:

The short answer is, "Yes, in a number of different configurations."

The following are the platforms supported for the application tier and the database tier of E-Business Suite Release 11i:
  • HP-UX PA RISC (64-bit)
  • Sun Solaris SPARC (64-bit)
  • IBM AIX (64-bit)
  • HP Tru64 UNIX (64-bit)
  • Windows x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux x86 (32-bit)
The following are the platforms supported for the application tier and the database tier of E-Business Suite Release 12:
  • HP-UX PA RISC (64-bit)
  • HP-UX Itanium (64-bit)
  • Sun Solaris SPARC (64-bit)
  • IBM AIX (64-bit)
  • Windows x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux x86 (32-bit)
  • Linux x86-64 (64-bit)
Supported via "Split Configurations"

In Release 11i, we certify and support a split configuration, where:
  • The database tier runs on a platform not supported for the application tier
  • The application server tier runs on one of the six platforms listed above
For the 9i Release 2 database (9iR2) and the 10g Release 1 database (10gR1), we support the following additional 64-bit platforms on the database tier in a split configuration for Release 11i:
  • HP-UX Itanium
  • Linux Itanium
  • Linux x86-64
  • Windows Server 2003 Itanium
9iR2 split configurations require the E-Business Suite Release 11.5.8 at minimum, and 10gR1 split configurations require 11.5.9 CU2 at minimum.

What About the 10gR2 Database?

[Editor Sep 15 Update:  For a discussion about the latest 10gR2 split configurations, see 10gR2 Database Split Configurations for Release 11i]

How About the Application Server Tier?

Application tier support on HP-UX Itanium as well as Linux x64 is planned for Release 12, and is being evaluated, but is not yet committed or planned, for Linux Itanium, Windows Itanium, and Windows x64.  Support for Sun Solaris SPARC, HP-UX PA RISC, and IBM AIX (all 64-bit) will be continued.
