Case Study: Oracle's Own Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 Upgrade

I've heard anecdotal reports suggesting that some customers hold off on upgrading to a given E-Business Suite release until we've done so ourselves here at Oracle. Oracle went live on R12.0.3 in January 2008, and a reader reminded me that I haven't highlighted this adequately. Here's a critical presentation from Eugene Weinstein and Sharon Leong at OAUG Collaborate 2008 (Denver) that I've been remiss in profiling:

Eugene and Sharon cover a lot of ground in this technically-oriented presentation, including:

  • A primer on the R12 file system
  • Supported upgrade paths from earlier Apps releases (11.5.x, 11.0)
  • A detailed step-by-step flowchart of the upgrade process
  • Applications DBA (AD) improvements relating to the upgrade process
  • Performance improvements relating to the upgrade
  • Best practices for:
  • Reducing downtime
  • Performing pre-upgrade, upgrade, and post-upgrade steps

Oracle Critical Patch Update for July 2008 Now Available

The Critical Patch Update for July 2008 is now available for download. Oracle strongly recommends applying the patches as soon as possible.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is the starting point for relevant information. It includes a list of products affected, pointers to obtain the patches, a summary of the security vulnerabilities, and links to other important documents. Supported Products that are not listed in the "Supported Products and Components Affected" Section of the advisory do not require new patches to be applied.

Also, it is essential to review the Critical Patch Update supporting documentation referenced in the Advisory before applying patches, as this is where you can find important pertinent information.

The Critical Patch Update Advisory is available at any of the following locations:

The next Critical Patch Update release dates are:

  • October 14, 2008
  • January 13, 2009
  • April 14, 2009
  • July 14, 2009

New Whitepaper: Mod_plsql and E-Business Suite 12

Mod_plsql is an Apache web server extension that can be used to develop web application pages using Server PL/SQL.

Architecture diagram showing flow from client to mod_plsql Apache mod to Oracle database

The Past is Prologue

Unlike Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i, Release 12 does not include mod_plsql as part of its technology stack. I've briefly discussed this architectural change in the following two articles:

It should be stressed that Oracle is fully committed to supporting mod_plsql as part of Oracle Application Server and as part of the Oracle Database distribution into the indefinite future.

The Oracle E-Business Suite is distinct from Oracle Application Server. Oracle E-Business Suite Development chooses to use specific Oracle Application Server components in the E-Business Suite technology stack. These decisions by E-Business Suite Development should not be interpreted to represent the release policies or plans for Oracle Application Server.

Going Into More Detail

Many of you have raised questions about why mod_plsql was removed from Release 12. Others have asked what to do about their mod_plsql-based Apps 11i customizations and extensions when upgrading to R12.

George Buzsaki, our preeminent E-Business Suite architect, has put together an excellent new whitepaper that addresses these topics, and more:

New Whitepaper: Cleaning Up Apps 12 on Windows

Our Applications Platforms Group has released a new whitepaper that describes steps for removing an Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 environment from a Windows system:

Windows Server 2003 Logo: Microsoft Windows Server 2003 logo There are many potential reasons for wishing to remove an environment, including an installation failure. Such a failure may result from improper install user privileges, missing prerequisite software, inadequate system resources, or other causes. Following the requirements and detailed instructions in the Oracle Applications Installation Guide, Oracle Applications Release Notes and Oracle Applications Installation and Upgrade Notes can help avoid failed installations. However, if your installation does fail, you must clean your system before you attempt to re-install Oracle Applications.

The new whitepaper describes procedures for:

  • Cleaning up Windows Registry keys
  • Clearing environment variables
  • Removing the Oracle Filesystem
  • Deleting old Program and Oracle Inventory entries

Out With the Old, In With the New

[July 16, 2008 Update: Apparently, the Firefox team isn't sitting around eating bonbons all day. They've just released Firefox 2.0.0.16, less than two weeks after 2.0.0.15 was released. The former may be safely used with the E-Business Suite.]

As a Firefox user myself, I'm pleased to see that Firefox 2.0.0.15 was released yesterday with thirteen fixes for security-related issues.

Firefox 2 logoPerhaps more significantly, Mozilla announced yesterday that Firefox 2 will be desupported in mid-December, 2008. As noted in ComputerWorld's article about this browser update, Mozilla supports previous Firefox releases for approximately six months after a major update.

When Will Firefox 3 Be Certified With Apps?

If the clock is ticking for Firefox 2, you obviously need to start thinking about upgrading your end-users to Firefox 3. We're in the final stages of our certification of FF3 with both Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i and 12. I can't provide a release date for this certification yet, for the usual reasons. I can tell you that the certification is going well and is proceeding quickly.

You're welcome to monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates on Firefox 3, which I'll post as soon as soon as they're available.

IBM AIX 6 Certified for Apps 12

Catching up on some certifications made during our blogging hiatus, here's another important platform announcement: Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 is now certified on IBM AIX 6 (Version 6.1). Note that new installations of EBS R12 on AIX 6 require version 12.0.4 with an updated Rapid Install startCD.

For details, see:

Understanding J2SE 1.4 End-of-Life Implications for Apps 11i

The eagle eyed amongst you may have noticed that "Overview of Using Java with Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i"  (Metalink Note 300482.1) has been updated to reflect the Sun End Of Life for J2SE 1.4  which is fast approaching us (October 2008)

As with Steven's previous article Understanding J2SE 1.3 End-of-Life Implications for Apps 11i the implications are the same now for Apps 11i users for J2SE 1.4

Implications for E-Business Suite Release 11i Users

Here are the implications if your Apps 11i environment is running on servers with J2SE 1.4:

  • If you log a Service Request for your environment, Oracle will continue to perform its usual diagnosis, triage, and search through our knowledge base for existing patches and workarounds.   This assistance may be constrained by limited access to a small number of remaining environments running J2SE 1.4.  It is extremely unlikely that we will issue new Apps patches for new compatibility issues identified with the E-Business Suite and J2SE 1.4.
  • Issues isolated to J2SE 1.4 itself will be referred to your operating system vendor for more assistance.  Depending on your vendor, you may be able to purchase extended support for J2SE 1.4 directly from them.
  • Issues that can't be reproduced in E-Business Suite environments running on J2SE 1.5 (5.0) or 1.6 (6.0) will likely result in a recommendation to upgrade to those later releases.

A Peek Backstage

Our blogging hiatus is over and we’re back online. I’m delighted that Oracle’s cutover to our shiny new blogging system went smoothly. Kudos to our Oracle Asia R&D for all of their efforts in getting everything over the Rubicon, including your valuable comments and questions.

imageFor those interested in these kind of things, we’re now running on Six Apart’s Movable Type Enterprise 1.5  running on top of Oracle’s own Content DB.  Very cool stuff.  Things will get even more interesting later this year when we upgrade to Movable Type Enterprise 4.

Some Housekeeping, Alas

Google tells me that there are many thousands of inbound links into this blog. My blogging team and I are deeply flattered. Sally Fields’ now-immortal Oscar acceptance speech springs to mind.

Honey, I Shrunk the Blog

Christmas is coming early this year for Oracle bloggers.  Oracle's long-awaited migration to a powerful new blogging host running Moveable Type is underway now.  All official Oracle blogs are on the verge of being frozen, so this is the last new post you'll see from me for a couple of weeks.

Don't worry --  you'll still be able to access all existing articles both before and after our cutover to our new host.

Once we've converted over, I expect that you may have to update some of your links and bookmarks to existing articles.  I'll post more details about that as soon as possible.
