Attracting Women

Women in IT

Fifteen years ago I was interviewing for a computer science lecturing job at one of the universities in the UK.  A key area of questioning was how I would encourage more women to take computer science and software engineering degrees.  This week I came across a calendar that had pictures of women in IT as film stars.  The purpose of the calendar was to encourage more women to look at careers in IT and profits from the sale of the calendar will be distributed among organisations promoting careers in IT for women and girls.  Funnily enough it was not one of the methods I suggested but having looked at the attendee lists for our workshops and looking at customers I visit we  are heavily under-represented on 50% of the population, so maybe the calendar will help.
