OpenWorld 2008

OOW-2008%20Store.JPGOracle Retail's "conference within a conference" at OpenWorld in San Francisco was very successful this year. In attendance were over 850 participants from 382 retail companies. Last year we held sessions in Moscone, but I have to say the hotel approach is my preference. I like the intimacy of the smaller venue, yet still having access to the main events is important. Of course the CrossTalk events in Austin and San Antonio are my all-time favorites, but I may have a Texas bias.

This year we tried Birds-of-a-Feather breakfast sessions in which there were 17 retailers represented. I hosted sessions on Security and Innovative Technologies. I'm curious to know if the participants found them valuable, or whether they just like the free breakfast and conversation. Either way I'm up for doing it again next year.

I think the most interesting event this year was Retail@Work. OOW always has a bookstore, and this year they ran Oracle Retail's Point-of-Service for both apparel and books. Several people mentioned that the store ran better this year, with shorter lines and better service. Revenue was up significantly year-over-year, which I'd like to think was attributable to our POS.
