Dmitry's upgrade findings

Last week in Russia Dmitry Volkov and me were discussing a lot of upgrade actions and projects going on. And thanks again, Dmitry, for organizing everything so well.

Dmitry pointed me to one thing regarding your client applications when you'll upgrade.
According to Note 883702.1, an $ORACLE_HOME/lib32 does not exist in an 64bit Oracle Database 11g Release 2. . This means you'll have to install a seperate 32bit client in addition.

Let me also take the chance to point to Dmitry's Blog where you find also some information on the Russian workshops: http://dsvolk.blogspot.com/

The Minimalist Approach to Content Governance - Request Phase

For each project, regardless of size, it is critical to understand the required ownership, business purpose, prerequisite education / resources needed to execute and success criteria around it. Without doing this, there is no way to get a handle on the content life-cyle, resulting in a mass of orphaned material. This lowers the quality of end user experiences.

The good news is that by using a simple process in this request phase - we will not have to revisit this phase unless something drastic changes in the project. For each of the elements mentioned above in this stage, the why, how (technically focused) and impact are outlined with the intent of providing the most value to a small team.

1. Ownership
Why - Without ownership information it will not be possible to track and manage any of the content and take advantage of many features of enterprise content management technology. To hedge against this, we need to ensure that both a individual and their group or department within the organization are associated with the content.

How - Apply metadata that indicates the owner and department or group that has responsibility for the content.

Impact - It is possible to keep the content system optimized by running native reports against the meta-data and acting on them based on what has been outlined for success criteria. This will maximize end user experience, as content will be faster to locate and more relevant to the user by virtue of working through a smaller collection.

2. Business Purpose
Why - This simple step will weed out requests that have tepid justification, as users will most likely not spend the effort to request resources if they do not have a real need.

How - Use a simple online form to collect and workflow the request to management native to the content system.

Impact - Minimizes the amount user generated content that is of low value to the organization.

3. Prerequisite Education Resources Needed
Why - If a project cannot be properly staffed the probability of its success is going to be low. By outlining the resources needed - in both skill set and duration - it will cause the requesting party to think critically about the commitment needed to complete their project and what gap must be closed with regard to education of those resources.

How - In the simple request form outlined above, resources and a commitment to fulfilling any needed education should be included with a brief acceptance clause that outlines the requesting party's commitment.

Impact - This stage acts as a formal commitment to ensuring that resources are able to execute on the vision for the project.

4. Success Criteria
Why - Similar to the business purpose, this is a key element in helping to determine if the project and its respective content should continue to exist if it does not meet its intended goal.

How - Set a review point for the project content that will check the progress against the originally outlined success criteria and then determine the fate of the content. This can even include logic that will tell the content system to remove items that have not been opened by any users in X amount of time.

Impact - This ensures that projects and their contents do not live past their useful lifespans. Just as with orphaned content, non-relevant information will slow user's access to relevant materials for the jobs.

Request Phase Summary
With a simple form that outlines the ownership of a project and its content, business purpose, education and resources, along with success criteria, we can ensure that an enterprise content management system will stay clean and relevant to end users - allowing it to deliver the most value possible. The key here is to make it straightforward to make the request and let the content management technology manage as much as possible through metadata, retention policies and workflow. Doing these basic steps will allow project content to get off to a great start in the enterprise!

Stay tuned for the next installment - the "Create Phase" - covering security access and workflow involved in content creation, enabling a practical layer of governance over our enterprise content repository.

33rd America's Cup - First Race 'Scheduled' for Wednesday

Best-of-three sailing race on course for mid-day start in Valencia, Spain

BMW ORACLE Racing is facing the Defender Alinghi in what could be a big Wednesday opening showdown. Strong winds today kept BMW ORACLE Racing from making a final pre-race sail. But, we're keeping our fingers crossed that the good winds continue as some say Oracle's boat does well in these conditions...and, of course, makes for an exciting race. We wish skipper Jimmy Spithill and his crew safe and fast days on the water.

** Race time for Wednesday will be determied in the morning (Valencia time) based on weather conditons. Keep posted and watch the race live at: www.bmworacleracing.com - click on "Live Stream"

Watch this short video to see how the dynamic DBA duo address this challenge using Oracle Exadata, forging a truce with their new business analyst and even getting her to crack a smile - sort of. Enjoy!

Tri-ing Toward Victory

BMW Oracle Racing Trimaran Competes for the 33rd America's Cup

Did you see the scale model of BMW Oracle Racing's Extreme 40 catamaran staged outside of the Howard Street Tent when you visited Oracle OpenWorld 2009? Did you get a chance to meet the BMW Oracle Racing tem members at the SLAM retail shop? Did know that those guys are taking the BMW ORACLE giant trimaran to the waves off the coast of Valencia, Spain, this week to compete for the 33rd America's Cup? Of course you did—that's why you read this blog!

Race 1 for the Cup was scheduled for Monday, but race officer Harold Bennett and the race committee team were unable to identify an appropriate wind for the first 20-mile leg.

"It was a good call," BMW ORACLE Racing's navigator Matteo Plazzi conceded. "Racing today would have been a gamble, and you don't want to gamble when there are only two points to win or lose." Instead, race organizers have rescheduled the first contest for Wednesday, February 10.

If you want to support the guys you met at last year's show as they pilot BMW ORACLE Racing's giant trimaran, you can catch all the action online. The America's Cup Website has live updates and streaming video from the shores of Valencia. You can also get updates directly from the BMW Oracle Racing Team through their Twitter feed and Facebook page.

So slip on your boat shoes, batten down your hatches, and cheer the BMW Oracle Racing Team on to victory from the comfort of your own deck chair.

How to make two distributed web apps talk using foreign JNDI concept.

In the present day scenario, we often tend to use webservice for the client-server interaction in distributed environment.Nevertheless, the foreign jndi concept is often used wherever legacy system is involved.
NB: Wherever server is being talked about, you should assume it as WebLogic server.

A brief outline about JNDI : The Java Naming and Directory Interface (JNDI) is a Java API for a directory that allows Java software clients to discover and look up data and objects via a name. Like all Java APIs that interface with host systems, JNDI is independent of the underlying implementation. Additionally, it specifies a service provider interface (SPI) that allows directory service implementations to be plugged into the framework. The implementations
may make use of a server, a flat file, or a database; the choice is up
to the vendor.
The JNDI API is used by the Java RMI (Remote method invocation) and Java EE APIs to look up objects in a network.

Non-distributed scenario: In this scenario your client and server applications both run on the same server, but this is not often the case given the need of distributed web apps in present day scenario. Here, you just have to register your local JNDI with weblogic server JNDI tree.
You can use the same jndi name across your client and server application to refer the same.

e.g, if you want to register two local jndi's that your app uses then do the following -

myjndiservice -

     |
     ------- jndiserviceA --first local jndi
     ------- jndiserviceB --second local jndi

Create the local jndi's as mentioned above and use it as fully qualified name from your jndi root.

Distributed scenario: In this scenario your client and server app reside in different server. You can't really use the local jndi name in both the app as any jndi registered as local is local to one of the app and foriegn to the other. So, we have to have some kind of mapping to refer to the remote jndi registered in a different server. WLS really comes handy in simplying the stuffs for you in this scenario. All you need to do is to register a local jndi to serverA, lets say where our server app is deployed
.
Lets say the name of this jndi is: myjndiservice/jndiserviceA

In serverB,where your client app is residing, you need to register a foreign jndi referring to the one in serverA. All you need to do is -

1.In serverB, register two foreign jndi's with corresponding local jndi mapping and the url mapping of the serverA, like t3://foreignjndihost(serverA's url):portno.
Make sure to provide the jndi context factory name, by default it is "weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory", however you can provide your custom class too.Provide the username password for the foreign jndi host server also.

2.Provide the foriegn jndi name mapping in your deployment descriptors, in this case in web.xml and weblogic-applications.xml

Now you are all set to use the local reference of foreign jndi name in your client app, which will inturn resolve it to the foreign jndi refernce and will make the communication happen between the client and server app.

Kullanmadığı her parçayı, diske yazar.

VIRTUAL_TABLE_PAGE_SIZE

v-Commerce?

You've heard of e-commerce and m-commerce, but how about v-commerce? A company called Pixazza is trying to make images displayed on the web act like a product catalog where anyone can click on an object within the picture to buy it for themselves. How many times have you seen an image and wanted to know where you could buy the products shown? If Pixazza has its way, the entire web could be a giant billboard for products. From their website...

Pixazza is a new platform that allows shoppers to buy products from photos seen on websites of our web publishing partners. Our unique capability allows these web publishers to generate incremental revenues by "visual commerce" enabling the images that already exist on their website.

Just as Google AdWords allows advertising within text, Pixazza is doing the same for pictures. Of course its no surprise that Google is an investor in this venture. Now identifying the products within pictures is rather labor intensive, so I can't image this will catch on as fast as AdWords did. But I'd be willing to bet that the click-through rate is much higher because...wait for it...a picture is worth a thousand words. (Come on, you had to see that coming.)

Case Study: Swedish Rail Operator SJ Increases Revenue and Customer Satisfaction Using CRM

What do you do when faced with looming competition due to industry deregulation and an uncertain economy?

You focus on the customer...which is exactly what Swedish rail operator SJ did to substantially increase revenue per customer through personalized customer experiences. Like many businesses, SJ realized that a large portion of its revenue came from a small but unknown subset of customers. To keep a step ahed of future competition, SJ needed the insight to develop and deliver the right customer experience to identify, attract, satisfy, and retain high-value customers. Now, SJ has seen a marked increase in average revenue per customer and is able to monitor revenue and profitabilty in various areas.

Key to SJ's success? Rigorous customer surveys and focus groups, excellent customer service, and a well-thought-out and well-executed CRM strategy leveraging Siebel CRM and its Marketing and Loyalty modules.
