I crashed Silicon Valley Code Camp last Saturday AM (at Foothill College in Los Altos), and I'm glad I did.
For one, I always enjoy being on a college campus. You can smell the intellectual curiosity in the air (and sometimes other things too).
I caught Shay Shmeltzer's talk on "What's Wrong with JSF", in which he cataloged the advantages of using a framework such as Oracle ADF to shore up JSF's weaknesses:
and also spent some time in Ted Young's introduction to Agile programming, and a Sun-Bebo-Yahoo panel on Web scalability, which was geeky to the nth degree. (And in which the Sun employee, in self-serving fashion, attempted to argue that OpenSolaris should be the preferred choice over Linux for AMP-based startups that need to scale. Hmmmm.) Unfortunately, due to a family vacation on Sunday, I missed Pieter Humphrey's hands-on lab for "Building and Deploying Applications with Oracle WebLogic Server 10gR3 and Eclipse", as well as Mark Wilcox's "Prototyping User/Role Management with Oracle Virtual Directory and Oracle Database XE", but maybe those guys want to comment here about how their sessions were received?
On the upside, I did get to have an African safari-like experience at Safari West in Santa Rosa. Sorry guys, rhinos and cheetahs got all my attention on Sunday.

They got cheetahs up there now? We went about 3 years back ... the kids thought the giraffes were cool but there was not much else going on. Unless animals are out for the kill or being chased they are always sleeping.

Yeah, cheetahs (in fenced areas), rhinos, zebras, lemurs, and many varieties of antelope/oryx/impala etc. Perhaps it was the time of day (late afternoon; grazing time?) but we saw lots of action.

SV CodeCamp started out with a more .NET focus, but Java is up and coming, especially if the SUN guys and Oracle can motivate more JUG and OUG participation....
I had a good class, and a number of developers that asked good questions about the technology and our strategy with developer tools, as well as the OC4J and WebLogic.
Oracle's presentations ranged on everything from Eclipse, Java EE, JAXB, JAXWS, Web services Interoperability, WCF, WS-Security, Database development, ERP, Project Management, Active Directory, Security, Local search, mashups, REST, WebLogic Server, AJAX development, JSF, Oracle's ADF, and Web development. Not too shabby! We'll be back next year for sure, likely bigger...
