In case you missed this Larry Ellison announced Oracle
Secure Enterprise Search at OpenWorld Tokyo last
night.
There are technical/business white papers, a
data sheet and a demo available at the indicated web site, but the most
important things to know are:
- Search
accuracy and user experience is comparable to that of Google. (I can
personally attest to this as we are in the midst of UAT for future
deployment on OTN/Oracle.com. SES rocks.) - Content can be
secured at a source or even document level. Thus, if you don't have
privs to view a certain document, or any documents from a certain
source, you will not see results for those
items. - This is a standalone
product.
on OTN.

This is a good thing. I always thought the search functionality on Oracle.com/OTN is useless. It's a real shame that a company like Oracle couldn't manage to get a better search on their site. Let's hope this improves a lot.
Will it also be implemented on MetaLink because whatever I look for I always find hundreds of release notes (most of the for RDB) but it's very hard to find the real valuable documents on metalink.

>> I'm really looking forward to seeing SES on OTN.
You and everybody everybody else! It would be nice to be able to locate an article or a forum thread with an OTN search engine instead of using Google's site specific search feature.
By the way, I hope there are plans to port Metalink to this better search engine soon.

I honestly don't have any information about deployment on MetaLink, which is managed by Support.
As for status vis-a-vis Ultrasearch, more info on that should be available at GA.

Oracle SES will be released in Oracle's financial Q4 (Mar 1 - May 31.) It is expected to be available for developers to download it from OTN after the release.
Ultra Search will continue to be available for now as an unsecure, basic search; however, it will not be the focus for feature enhancements. Oracle's flagship enterprise search product is SES, with the advantages of comprehensive security, high relevance/search-quality, and out-of-the-box easy operation over Ultra Search.
