Monday I sat in on the keynote where Oracle president Charles Phillips gave a bunch of interesting stats and observations on Linux adoption and Oracle's strategy.
Linux adoption stats :
32% unit server growth, 31% growth by customer revenue last year
+1,500 ISVs support Oracle on Linux -- up from almost zero 3 years ago
Oracle's OnDemand or software as a service business has 10,000servers, 64bit linux, with 2.5 petabytes of storage - a linux grid covering 1 acre of space - and new servers being added all the time.
In terms of strategy :
He made the observation that you can't efficiently support 50 different OS's and standard predictable configurations - you have to make a choice. Oracle chose linux as the standard for our grids, we design our products around standards, and use std components, and in doing so it brings the cost of computing down.
He also made the observation that the OnDemand model of computing will become the std for years to come - this trend bodes well for usage of Oracle RAC on linux in grids made up of commodity servers.
