Twitter Oracle OpenWorld

Start Right Here

Tweet, tweet. That's the sound of Twitter, and it's one of many ways you can get involved at Oracle OpenWorld 2008.

Twitter was a popular addition to Oracle OpenWorld last year along with many other social networking tools. Since then, microblogging on Twitter has exploded, and its use at conferences has added a whole new dimension of instant discussion among attendees. This blog will help make sure that you're not left out of the Twitterverse at Oracle OpenWorld this year.

If you're not yet familiar with Twitter, Common Craft made a great video, Twitter in Plain English, describing the service, and BusinessWeek recently published an article with a slide show about its uses. After you get started, you can stay in touch with us year round via @Oracle and @oracletechnet, and once Oracle OpenWorld 2008 gets underway, follow the event tracker @oow for some great convention information.

Also, we just started our own Twitter account: @oracleopenworld. We'll be using this account to help spread the latest word about Oracle OpenWorld 2008—but mostly we'll be listening to what you and the rest of the the Twitterati are saying about the big event.

You might also follow your colleagues at the conference to see their updates on a regular basis. That way, you can share the scoop on informative booths, engaging sessions, and exclusive parties. (But be careful. Twitter can be very addictive. You can find other Oracle-related Twitter addicts to follow by checking out the Oracle Tweeters wiki page.)

Twitter also allows you to follow discussions containing specific phrases, such as "Oracle OpenWorld." Using Twitter through instant messaging allows you to track key words you're interested in: anyone sending an update containing your tracked phrase will show up in your IM window, even if you don't usually follow that person. You can even use a search engine such as Summize or Tweet Scan to connect with other people sending updates about Oracle OpenWorld or any subject of your choice.

Twitter is only one of many easy ways you can keep up with Oracle OpenWorld. Don't forget, you can also shape the big event by joining Oracle Mix. And, you can always leave a comment on any of our Oracle OpenWorld blog posts.

@Stephen

There was a typo in your hyperlink. I took the liberty and tweaked it, so now the URL works.

Twitter was definitely a benefit during Oracle OpenWorld 2007. For example, I was reading (and contributing to) the @oow Twitter account during the Larry Ellison keynote, and it was valuable to hear the different perspectives of everyone. (One example: because I was watching on TV, I was unaware that people left the main hall when Ellison briefly left the stage, but @oow provided this information.

And if I can interject another point, FriendFeed is another tool that has emerged over the past few months as a tool for sharing and collaboration. Be sure to check out the FriendFeed rooms "oraclestuff" and "oow."

Tom :

How did you Twitter during the keynotes? If I recall the network connectivity in the keynote rooms (i.e., wireless connections) was poor to non-existent. I thought that lack of wireless connectivity was deliberately done to reduce distractions but in the Web 2.0 world it is all about connectivity and chatter even during the keynotes.

So, do you think that the keynotes rooms will have better wireless connectivity this year?

Jodi Morrison :

Tom, we are working on improving the connectivity of the wireless network in the keynote room to allow more people to twitter, blog, etc during the sessions.
