Next week as part of Oracle OpenWorld we have some activities dedicated to dynamic languages. Here's the list for easy access
| Title, Presenter, Time, Location, Session ID | Abstract |
| The Way to the Web with PHP and Oracle Database | | Christopher Jones, Oracle | | Monday 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm | | Hilton Yosemite Room A | | S292070 |
| Discover how the PHP Web scripting language's OCI8 extension works with Oracle Database, and get the top PHP tips on increasing the throughput of your Web applications. Also hear about PHP libraries and frameworks that boost developer productivity. This technical session is ideal for anyone intrigued by where PHP fits with Oracle and what it offers Oracle Database developers. |
| Web 2.0 Applications Hands-on Lab with PHP and Oracle Database | | Christopher Jones, Oracle; Kuassi Mensah, Oracle | | Monday 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm | | Hilton Continental Ballroom 4 | | S292073 |
| Welcome to the world of Oracle and the PHP Web scripting language. This hands-on-lab shows how to develop maintainable, scalable PHP applications with Oracle Database. Through a series of instructor-led exercises, learn how to create highly functional Web 2.0 PHP applications for your enterprise. Basic progamming skills are assumed. |
| Scale Your PHP Application to Tens of Thousands of Connections | | Luxi Chidambaran, Oracle & Srinath Krishnaswamy, Oracle | | Monday 1:45 pm - 2:45 pm | | Hilton Continental Parlor 7 & 8 | | S292132 |
| This presentation introduces the different ways your PHP Hypertext Preprocessor (PHP) application can create a connection to an Oracle database. It also discusses how to scale your PHP application to tens of thousands of connections by using Database Resident Connection Pool, a new Oracle Database 11g feature. Finally, it covers tips on building highly available PHP applications. |
| Hands-on Lab: Ruby on Rails with Oracle Database | | Christopher Jones, Oracle; Kuassi Mensah, Oracle | | Monday 4:45 pm - 5:45 pm | | Hilton Continental Ballroom 4 | | S292211 |
| Ruby on Rails is an exciting, productive, object-oriented scripting language (Ruby) and framework (Rails). In this instructor-led hands-on lab, you install all the required pieces, including Ruby, Rails, Oracle Database Express Edition, and the Ruby-OCI8 driver, and learn, through code samples, how to quickly develop maintainable, scalable Web applications, using Ruby On Rails features with built-in scalability mechanisms of the enterprise-class Oracle Database. |
| Digging Deeper into Dynamic Scripting Languages: Using Ruby on Rails with Oracle Database | | Kuassi Mensah, Oracle | | Tuesday 10:45 am - 11:45 am | | Hilton Continental Parlor 7 & 8 | | S292213 |
| If you are a Ruby on Rails (RoR) developer looking to exploit Oracle Database or if you are an Oracle developer looking to get on the RoR bandwagon, this technical session is for you. It covers what's new in Oracle Database 11g for RoR developers; installing RoR with Oracle Database; database connection; transaction management; datatypes and their mapping; using OCI8, Database Interface (DBI), and ActiveRecord with Oracle Database; and what's next (road map). |
In the exhibition hall there are adjacent demo pods for both PHP and Ruby/Ruby on Rails. I'm scheduled to be at the Ruby one on Wednesday afternoon and at the PHP one on Thursday morning. Drop by to say hi if you don't catch me another time.
And, yes, the PHP lab on Monday clashes with Luxi's talk. My recommendation is that if you are already a PHP user then go to his talk, otherwise come to the lab. The lab will let you play with PHP on a pre-setup computer, giving you an insight into how PHP and Oracle work. It'll also be a time for you to chat with us in a relaxed environment.
