Quebec Wrap-up (If It's Tuesday It Must Be Australia)

I enjoyed my brief taste of Montreal where for some reason no one commented on the relative performance of Australia vs. Canada in the World Cup Cricket.

I had to leave the conference early to make a flight to Australia (where I am currently) so I didn't see Roberto Mansfield from the University of Pennsylvania give his presentation "Leveraging the Power of Oracle with PHP: Taking Advantage of the Database".  The presentation comes from his practical experience with Oracle and is well worth reviewing.

The combined slides from my workshop and session are under the PHP and Performance banner.

Thanks to the PHP Quebec organizing committee, official and unofficial volunteers for their care with the conference.  Several bloggers have already made mention of the efficiency of getting feedback to presenters; this was noteworthy.  I'm sure all the effort put into this year's conference will benefit them in future too.

I was speaking with Hans Zaunere from New York PHP about  PHP conferences in general.  He noted that the cost of venues in NY was high - I guess Sofitel-class hotels might be out of the question there.  More importantly the theme and direction of PHP conferences was under discussion. I wonder if multi-venue or parallel micro events in the one city might work?  Vendors with local office space can run one or two vendor-specific sessions, perhaps discussing other technologies too. This might attract an audience that wouldn't come to a dedicated PHP conference and also allows the PHP community to gather in close proximity.
