Running E-Business Suite on Exadata V2

The Exadata Database Machine Version 2 was released at OpenWorld 2009 to great fanfare. Since its unveiling, I've been getting a steady stream of questions from E-Business Suite customers who are intrigued by Exadata V2's potential. All 11gR2 Database Applications are Compatible The E-Business Suite and other OLTP applications will run on the Exadata V2 system if they're certified with the 11gR2 Database on Linux. Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i is certified on the 11gR2 database, so it can run on Exadata V2 today.

Applications Change Management Pack 3.0 and Applications Management Pack 3.0 Now Available

Our E-Business Suite Applications Technology Group recently released a new product, the Application Change Management Pack (ACMP), and a new version of their Application Management Pack (AMP).

The Application Change Management Pack is noteworthy because it provides three new tools for automating updates to multiple E-Business Suite instances:

  • Customization Manager automates the packaging of your customizations into AD-compliant packages that can be deployed across multiple E-Business Suite instances.  Before packaging, the Customization Manager validates your customizations against Oracle's software coding best practices.

New Whitepaper: Manually Cloning Apps 11i Databases Running 10g or 11g RAC

Our Applications Technology Group recently published a matrix showing certified cloning scenarios for E-Business Suite databases running in Real Application Cluster (RAC) configurations.  Since then, some concerns have been raised about the lack of Rapid Clone support for EBS environments running on the 10g and 11g databases.

In response to those concerns, our Applications Technology Group has published a new whitepaper:

Certified Oracle RAC Scenarios for Oracle E-Business Suite Cloning

[Editor's note: EBS cloning can be pretty involved. There are many different cloning scenarios, including cloning a RAC-based environment to an identical RAC environment, cloning from a RAC-based environment to a non-RAC environment, and adding or subtracting RAC nodes while cloning. Our Applications Technology Group has had to make some decisions about the relative priority of these scenarios. Filesystems like ASM, OMF, OCFS2, and NFS add further complexity to the certification matrix. If you would like to share your opinions about these decisions, post a comment below. Your feedback will be sent directly to our ATG Product Management team.]

Cloning an Oracle E-Business Suite system that uses an Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) enabled database involves numerous different technology components and steps, and would therefore be a complex, error-prone process if carried out manually. To speed up, simplify, and enhance the reliability of the process, Oracle offers the following tools for use in cloning RAC-enabled Oracle E-Business Suite systems:

Smoking! Running Apps 11i on the HP Oracle Database Machine

Picture of HP Oracle Exadata Storage Server

Like every sysadmin I know, I yearn for bigger, beefier servers for my E-Business Suite environments.  I've been dreaming about the new HP Oracle Database Machine since its unveiling at OpenWorld 2008.

In case you missed that announcement, this is a server with mainframe-class street cred: up to 14 GB/second in raw I/O bandwidth, which translates to up to 50 GB/second when handling compressed data.  Storage scales up to petabytes when combined with the HP Oracle Exadata Storage Server.  This machine is optimized for handling huge Oracle databases, so it's inevitable that EBS customers with large databases have shown interest in this hardware.

The Database Machine runs Oracle Database 11gR1 11.1.0.7 and Real Application Clusters on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.1.  We've just certified Oracle E-Business Suite Release 11i with the 11gR1 11.1.0.7 database release, so it's now possible to run Apps 11i on this hardware.

Database 11gR1 Version 11.1.0.7 Certified with EBS 11i

Here's a great way to end the year 2008 for Certifications with EBS: Oracle Database 11gR1 version 11.1.0.7 is now certified with E-Business Suite Release 11i. 11.1.0.7 is the first database patchset available for the 11gR1 Release 11.1.0.6. Customers can upgrade to this version following the Notes listed in the Documentation section. 11107PS.PNG

Humana Case Study: Implementing a Highly Available Oracle E-Business Suite Architecture (OpenWorld 2008 Recap)

I'm highlighting OpenWorld 2008 presentations that cover some of the most popular E-Business Suite technology stack topics. A catalog of all of the Applications Technology track sessions with links to the presentations is available here:

Every EBS system administrator knows that you need to consider high-availability requirements when planning your E-Business Suite implementation.  You need to account for the peak number of concurrent users who will be using the E-Business Suite at any given time.  You also need consider worst-case scenarios and your plans if one or more servers in your environment go down.

Elke Phelps, co-author of the Oracle Applications DBA Field Guide (mini-review), discussed Humana's recent experiences in upgrading their E-Business Suite for high availability in this session:

11.1.0.6 Real Application Clusters Certified with EBS 11i

So many Notes, so little time...  You might have caught my recent article that touched on scaling up your E-Business Suite Release 11i environment with Real Application Clusters for reporting purposes or to improve your environment's overall performance and fault tolerance.  If you're wondering whether this applies to EBS 11.5.10.2 environments running the 11gR1 11.1.0.6 database, the answer is, "Yes."

Three Options for Scaling Up E-Business Suite for Reporting

The run-up to our annual OpenWorld conference consists of frenzied activities to ensure that all of our planned certifications wrap up in time to be announced at the conference.  The follow-up from OpenWorld consists of handling questions, bug reports, and escalations from our sessions, panels, and private customer meetings.  Given that this is all on top of our regular day jobs, one day I'm going to print up some t-shirts that say, "I survived another Oracle OpenWorld."

So, back in the blogging saddle again. I'll address one of the architectural questions that seems to pop perennially:

How do I handle heavy reporting overhead without disrupting my E-Business Suite instance's transactional users?  Can I offload this to a separate reporting instance?
