More on Twitter lists

Today, we presented Twitter's new list feature at our weekly MarketingLab meeting. Here's a couple of things I highlighted.

1. Word cloud of list names to which @oracle has been added

Word cloud created with the ever-amazing Wordle.net</

The key terms are all pretty obvious ones, but in the future who knows what names people will give us.

2. Top 10 most-followed lists to which @oracle has been added

I expect this list to change quite a bit over the coming weeks and month as more lists are created by more people. At first sight, there seems to be value in being on popular lists.

	Account

	List

	Followers

	@Scobleizer

	tech-companies

	206

	@eddieawad

	oracle

	33

	@vaaka

	myfavorites

	24

	@oraclemix

	oracle

	23

	@irwebreport

	public-companies

	19

	@chrissel

	brands

	16

	@DarrellHudson

	web-technology

	15

	@HLJames

	followfriday

	12

	@kitson

	brands

	9

	@jeslongcdw

	cdw-partners

	9

* * *

We also talked about useful applications for Oracle-generated lists (like the one we created last week). Let us know if you have any ideas for lists you'd like to see us curate. Thanks!

Influence currency on Twitter: first followers, now lists...

First of all, I was wrong. You actually can add yourself to your own Twitter lists. Phew!

Here's what we woke up to this morning. Following yesterday's tweet, ten lists have already been created that contain @oraclemix (thanks, everyone!):

A quick look over to the @oracle account showed an even higher uptake at 41 lists.

There are a number of things to keep an eye on: For example, what are people calling the lists they put you on? How many people are following those lists? We're definitely adding "listed how many times" to the things we track.

It will be interesting to watch this unfold as the roll-out of this feature continues and more people play with lists. As always, let us know if you find more use cases that make the most of lists.

This morning we found that Twitter had enabled their new list feature for the @oraclemix account.

Thinking of the obvious, I quickly created the "Oracle" list of currently 23 official Oracle Twitter accounts (btw, that's quite a jump from where we were three months ago).

New Mix group: Google Wave Users

Maybe you've heard about it. There's a new thing from Google called Google Wave.

According to Wikipedia:

Google Wave is "a personal communication and collaboration tool" announced by Google at the Google I/O conference on May 27, 2009. It is a web-based service, computing platform, and communications protocol designed to merge e-mail, instant messaging, wikis, and social networking. It has a strong collaborative and real-time focus supported by extensions that can provide, for example, robust spelling/grammar checking, automated translation between 40 languages, and numerous other extensions.voiiterytr Initially released only to developers, a "preview release" of Google Wave was extended to nearly 1 million users beginning September 30, 2009, with the initial 100,000 users each allowed to invite up to twenty additional users.

Since we're always up for trying out new things, we've joined this wave created by the AppsLab. If you're lucky and already have your Wave account, feel free to join us as we try to figure out how this new tool fits in with everything else.

We've also started a new group of Google Wave Users which you're invited to join as well (at 9 members since we launched it few days ago, it already made it on today's hot groups list).

Oracle Mix: The next 100 days

As I'm sure you know by now, we're back from Oracle OpenWorld 2009 and are now focusing our attention on Mix yet once again.

Over the coming 100 days, we'd like to give Mix a major push. This includes (but probably won't be limited to) the following:

Rolling out several ready-to-go features which we didn't get a chance to deploy in time for OpenWorld

Implementing a few important infrastructure changes (we'll talk about those in more detail later)

Cleaning up our backlog of bugfixes and minor improvements

Revamping our feedback management process

Updating the Mix roadmap as we head into 2010 (and get started on implementing the first few iterations)

Especially with regard to this last piece, we'd like ask for your help. Following our efforts earlier this year to solicit input from our key group admins, we want you to tell us where you want us to take Mix in the next year.

When Mix launched in 2007, it didn't come fully baked. It was a prototype of something potentially much bigger, but the feature set we've managed to implement since then is still lacking behind what most people expect from a social network today (Facebook, LinkedIn and Xing being prominent sites Mix is commonly being compared to).

So with that, why don't you tell us where you want Mix to be headed? What's your biggest gripe? Where do you see the most promising usecases? We'll figure out a way to capture and organize this feedback in a more structure way, but for now please go ahead an leave us a comment here. If you've already made a feature request or posted an idea for improvement on Mix, please make sure you link to it so people can follow up.

Thank you, and enjoy your weekend!

Social schedule builder: Feedback, please!

As you all know, we launched an alpha version of the social schedule builder for Oracle Openworld 2009 a couple of days before the event kicked off.

The basic premise was the idea that we could add value by combining the publicly available schedule information with the social graph on Oracle Mix. By allowing Mix members to share which of the many hundreds of sessions they find interesting or plan to attend they might help their friends and colleagues make better scheduling decisions (and hence have a better experience at OpenWorld).

Due to the challenges we encountered during the integration with Oracle Mix and the time it took to push this live, not all of the cool features we had available (e.g. mobile interface and others) were activated, and some of our Mix members had trouble accessing the application at all.

We've already talked to some of you who got a chance to try out this new feature in person but wanted to take the opportunity to ask all of our alpha testers to leave a comment here on our blog to tell us what you thought.

How did it work?

Did you find it useful?

Would you like to see something like this next year?

What other ideas to you have that could improve the scheduling experience?

Thanks to everyone who spent the time giving this feature a shot despite the fact we were only to release it last minute. We appreciate your effort very much and would like to reward you with an even better release at one of our upoming events (e.g. OpenWorld 2010).

Just in time for OpenWorld 2009: A social schedule builder (alpha)

Today, we'd like to invite you to try out a new feature on Mix we've been working on over the past couple of months. It's an idea we've been wanting to implement for quite some time but didn't have the resources to do so.

The social session builder combines schedule information from events (in this case, Oracle OpenWorld 2009) with the social network on Mix. It allows you to easily build your own personal schedule but also to see who in your network is attending the same sessions.

We weren't able to put this feature on our roadmap for Mix this year. Instead, we worked with a third party to mock up the experience so that we can at least gather valuable feedback for next year. If it turns out that this is functionality is something that Mix members want to see we will try to secure the resources and funding to make it happen.

Please note that while the third-party application is very solid, we're still working out some kinks on the SSO integration piece. One requirement (for us as well as the security review team) was for this to rely on Oracle SSO. That means Mix users can use the third-party application without additional signup or login steps. We finally got it figured out; however, due to the history of how Mix was set up and how we handle our own Mix profiles, there's a slight chance that some users won't have access to the social schedule builder application. If you're one of the unfortunate ones, please contact us and we'll try to find a work-around.

Please log into Mix and you'll find a new header navigation item "OpenWorld Schedule (alpha)" which will take you directly to the schedule builder app.

Here's what we'd like you to do:

Give it a try!

Let us know any problems

Let us know if you find the new feature useful

Tell your friends

It's important to note that as a prototype, this application is not integrated with our official schedule builder application yet. While we pull in all the publicly available schedule information from there, it won't reflect any updates you make on our app. So for any sessions or events that require "first come, first serve" registration, please make sure to also go to the official schedule builder (though we assume that at this point most people will already have done so).

Thanks to the tireless efforts of Chris and Mike at The Social Collective and to the people on our SSO team who steered us through this integration. It took quite a bit of effort to get this piece up and running, and we hope you all like it.

Mike has posted his thoughts here: Procrastinators Rejoice: OpenWorld's Social Schedule Builder is Live!

And with that: enjoy, and have a fun Oracle OpenWorld 2009!
