Testing the new Oracle video player

The Video team has been busy working on a new Oracle video player. They've asked us to embed it on our blog for testing purposes.

Check it out:

Please have a look and let us -- and them -- know how it's working for you (make sure to leave your OS and browser information in the comments). Thanks!

Update (2.23pm): As per Andrea's comment below, this is only a beta player that the Digital Media team is using as a "proof of concept" for functional testing within their environment. Just to keep in mind when you find things that aren't quite perfect yet. Thanks!

Hi,

Works great on windows XP (oracle obi) using google chrome browser version 2.0.172.133

Way to go guys! Looks good!

Safari 4 / Mac OSX 10.5.7

Good.

Windows XP, FF 3.5

Worked great on Mac OS X 10.5.7 using Firefox 3.5. Switched back and forth between qualities and didn't notice that much difference.

Video was great quality and started up very quickly. No buffering issues. Video stops (but not audio) when you right click.

Works great on:

Mac OSX 10.5.6
Safari 3.2.1 and Firefox 3.0.11

WinXP (Oracle obi)
IE7 and Firefox 3.0.6

Also, player did NOT show up in the Google Reader RSS feed. Had to click through to the actual blog post.

Thanks for the comments, guys. Very helpful!

Works great in Vista with Chrome.

One small beef -- mute then unmute sets volume to max rather than returning volume to the pre mute state.

OK on MacOS X 10.5.7 Firefox 3.5

Not working on an iPhone 3G firmware 3.0. I suppose flash is the culprit.

Works on Windows 7 beta under firefox 3.5

cool blog!!!

hope to colaborate!!

Thank you all for the valuable feedback. This is a beta player that we're using as a "proof of concept" for functional testing within our environment.

re: iPhone, yes this is a Flash asset. Perhaps someone could put a call in to Mr. Jobs & let him know Flash would be sooooo cool on his shiny iPhone ;)

Thanks all for your testing - extremely helpful!

This is only our initial POC... lots more exciting video-related stuff on the way.

Cheers,

David

I opened IE8 on Win XP, it ran fine.

Watching now on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.2 with Firefox 1.5 (it works so I haven't updated!)

Works Great:
IE8.0.6001.18783
OS:Vista

Works OK on Ubuntu with Flash 10 and Firefox 3.5.
The transition animations look really grainy though, that just might be the quality they rendered it at. Also, when he says "see the links below" I see nothing, not sure if there was supposed to be an embedded clickable overlay.

Working Great :)!!!! on WinXP with firefox 3.5

Cheers!!
Anand

It works fine, on WinXp Professional edition
most important it's on VPCC environment, most video player fail but this one work!

Cheers Oracle~ :)

wow... thanks Johnny, I think you're our first documented vpcc user! cheers!

Should maybe get rid of the word buffering under the load circle. The word buffering is scary and reminds of bad microsoft products and mega slow 90's internet vid...

working for me on WinXP with Firefox 3.0.11

Question - will this be available for videos aimed at an internal, as well as an external audience?

Works on IE6.029 & XP Pro
Animations are grainy though I suspect this isnt a problem with the streaming...

The "connecting" is spinning and no connection. It does not seem to be working for me here. Tried different proxy settings (no proxy, manual, wpad, etc.) none of them helped.

My previous post with the problem was regarding WinXP prof.
Tested on Ubuntu too and it works on it nicely.

Working for me via Firefox 3.011 and VPN'd into the network.
Will this player be for internal or external use or both?

Would be cool to have a full screen button

Thank you all for posting your comments. We're working on addressing some issues that you have posted. There is also research on best practices as it relates to encoding. All flv files are using a VP6 codec that was encoded by another source for testing purposes. Rest assured quality will be improved.

Thanks Matt for your comment. The original videos are posted on a microsite (http://bit.ly/dEJ26) and the reference to links was from this viewing experience.

Thanks Michah on the comment related to "buffering." We've received some feedback on other projects where a majority of "non-technical" users appreciated the visual queue of seeing the player do something.

Laslo - Can you please click to launch this debugger (http://bit.ly/UQzTv) and then re-start the player on your machine so we can get some data to review? Please note you need to run side-by-side.

Many thanks to you all!

Michah - It's funny you would mention "full screen" as we were just discussing this one this morning. I've heard there have been some issues if DHTML is not enabled. We've noticed some players have it and some don't. If you have any insight on this one, we would love to hear it. We want to develop a player that really can scale. Another issue is quality where with full screen the quality might not be as good. So there are trade-offs. Do people want full screen even if the quality is not that great??

Hey Ami Davis! It's great to connect with you through Mix. Yes. We are going to look at the internal use case, but for now we are focused on satisfying requirements for external use cases. We'll need to scope issues related to security for our internal facing assets. Feel free to share some of your ideas on internal use cases...

Runs cool on WinXP with firefox 3.5

Firefox 3.5 on RH 4 plays OK but it's not terribly crisp especially with moving static graphics such as at the beginning red/black sequence.

Thanks Kevin on your feedback related to RH 4. We're taking a look at different "flavors" related to encoding.

Works well

Ubuntu 9.04
Firefox 3.0.11

Doesn't work on Nokia N95 8GB, not compatible with flash lite ver: 3.0 (N95 is on latest firmware)

The volume control doesn't respond to mouse click on any web browser. The dragging feature works just fine.

Looks great on WinXP Pro with IE7

Thanks Rohan. I'm taking a look but having a hard time getting the media to load on Corporate LAN in my field office.

Thanks Amol. We'll take a look at the volume control issue and have noted the Nokia issue as well.

It's a basic beta player and does not reflect design efforts. It's purely an effort to test code here (we worked on a recent project that involved a media player that was developed to scale on corporate lan). There is no way to share or embed with this player.

We're taking a look at full-screen functionality.

Also, can you please let me know if you would like the ability to embed a snippet of a video? We've heard that this would be helpful and relevant especially if you want to reference something specific in your blog or your discussions.

All that comes up in the native browser on Blackberry Curve 8330 is the string [Flash: ProductPlayer480x270]

Looks very good in XP sp3 running Firefox 3.5. A little jerky, but it's a heavy traffic day here.

Work on windows 2003 server standard edition SP1. Firefox 3.5

windows xp sp2+IE7
look great!very clear and smooth.

Works well on Win XP pro 2002 sp2 and Firefox 3.0.11

Looks smooth on XP Pro SP3, Chrome 2.0.172.33

Johan

Contgraulations, Andrea and Dave, this looks really great.

In IE I'm noticing when I hit pause, the video only stays paused for a few seconds, then re-buffers and starts to play again.

:-)

Congratulations Andrea, looks great.

I'm noticing in IE, however, when I hit "pause," the video only stays paused for a few seconds, then begins to play again. Odd ...

:-)

Works fine.

Vista Ultimate and IE 7.0.6000

Thank you for your comments. We've working on updates to the base code since the original post and look forward to giving updates at a later time.

Great on Mac Os 10.5.7 and Firefox 3.0.11. Hope you'll release asap this great video player, so we can use it in Connect and other internal pages. Thanks

IE 7.0.6001.18000 works very well.
I am on Windows Vista, unknown version...

But, I am on a very slow line, and it works better than other video players as far as rewind, move a spot forward in the movie and so on. That is really good news.

At least to me.

Works fine.
IE 6 on Win XP SP3

Auto starting the playback is not recommended though. Give the user a choice of when the video starts. Also, what happens if there is more than one video on a page? Will it auto start them all at once?
