I am pleased to announce that the Discoverer Metadata Conversion Assistant is now available with the Oracle BI EE 10.1.3.4 release. For further details, please see this new page on OTN:
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/bi/discoverer-migration/index.html
The Metadata Conversion Assistant is a command line utility that accelerates the conversion of Discoverer metadata in the form of an EEX file to Oracle BI EE metadata in the form of an RPD file.
Those of you who are familiar with the metadata for both products may be wondering how it is possible to convert what appears to be a single layer of metadata in Discoverer to the three layers required by Oracle BI EE - the Physical, Business Model and Presentation Layer. This is a question we asked ourselves when we first considered the potential for a migration utility. The answer becomes clear when you consider the Discoverer metadata properties as seen below:
In this example, we're looking at the Discoverer metadata properties for a folder 'Products'. These properties include details of the Database, the object Owner and the object name. In a similar manner, it is also possible to inspect the properties of Discoverer metadata joins. The Metadata Conversion Assistant is able to take these properties and build up the various Oracle BI EE metadata layers - for example, the properties described here are a good source of information for building the Oracle BI EE Physical layer.
Here are some of the topics I'm planning on covering over the next few months. It would be great to hear about any other topics you'd like to see discussed.
