Can Linux Perform like the Mainframe?

People have been looking at Mainframe Modernization for many years.  There are a host of reasons why IT Managers and Business Units are wanting to get off of the mainframe (Huge MIPS costs, workforce skills, lack of agility...etc). I heard it said yesterday by a CIO that their Infrastructure (mainframe) was 2/3's of the budget and giving them 1/3 of the value.  The desire is there, but the question has been, "What can I move to that will give me the performance that my business demands?"

For all of its high costs, the mainframe has a great track record for availability and reliability.  It has only been until recently that Linux and the supporting hardware has made it into the mainstream, and even then, the core systems of a company often remain on the mainframe.

There is also the issue of transaction rates or TPC's. The throughput of the mainframe is huge. If you are trading stocks, checking ports of entry or processing credit card transactions, the throughput requirements are very high. 

So, can Linux stand up to this quality of service?  Oracle believes the answer is a strong YES. We feel that  modernizing to the Oracle  stack can provide that mainframe quality of service. With the HA of 10g, the processing power of modern hardware and our Fusion Middleware, we have not only been able to match the availability of the mainframe, but also increase the transaction throughput as well.

setting some very very impressinve TPC-C records on using Oracle.

In many of our modernizations, we've also seen TPC's increase by 20% over the mainframe by running Oracle Fusion Middleware and RAC on Linux.

With respect to availability, we can look to our recent migration in Korea. Believed to be one of the largest migrations in the world, this 7500 MIP application has been running on Oracle RAC with no downtime since it went live last year.

So, can Linux perform with the availability and throughput of the mainframe? With Oracle, the answer is yes.

Hey everyone. I wanted to post a quick note about the upcoming Open World event in Sao Paolo, Brazil. (http://www.oracle.com/goto/openworld-la/index.html)

It should be a great time. I will be there working with Parnters and Customers who are facing legacy modernization issues. There is a large Mainframe footprint in Brazil and issues around SOA Enablement of the Mainframe abound as well Moderniztion of  Adabas/Natrual and good ole Cobol.
