bumptop, interface of the future?

Sometimes I use this blog to mention other cool technologies and today I was invited to participate in the beta of a very, very cool new piece of software. Bumptop. Words don't really do it justice, you need to watch the video below.

I think this is a wonderfully fresh approach to interacting with items on your desktop. The current beta version has only a few simple features and these already demonstrate how much richer our computer desktop environments could be. Imagine the features this could eventually boast. Creating business process not by Visio, but by grabbing 3D objects and attaching them together to represent systems and services. A web site design tool, where I pick up images and stretch them into place on my web page. For now however it is a valid replacement for my desktop environment and i've not wanted to do something like this since Windows 3.11! So below is a screen shot of my desktop, note the IRM protected document upper left which I just threw onto here from my USB key. Got to tie this article into IRM somehow!

My Bumptop Desktop

After only a few hours I was easily comfortable with having a pile of documents just stacked on my desktop. All week I have been working with about 20 PowerPoint presentations whilst on site with a customer and Bumptop has been a useful and fun tool in organizing each day what set of documents I am working on.

Now all that needs to happen is for someone to take the iPhone touch technology, create a 24 inch flat screen monitor and develop bumptop like crazy and we have our next generation of interfaces!

Dave:

It looks pretty neat but I have not used my Windows Desktop for a couple years now. I hide the icons and access Desktop icons from the taskbar when I need them.

Very cool new technology and great demo. Can't wait to test out the software.
