Thriving In Tough Economic Times

As I scroll through my Yahoo account, I'm still surprised at the number of negative economic headlines posted by the media. BusinessWeek writes, "Flat Holiday Sales for E-tailers?" and the BBC writes, "Big drop in US consumer spending". With all of this "positive" media, how does a business continue to grow or thrive?

Here's my take on the top 5 things you can do as a small business to thrive during these so-called tough economic times. (Please remember, these are my opinions and do not reflect the opinions of Oracle Corporation and or it's executives)

1. Specialize
Take note of all your service and support offerings and clearly identify the margin/profit leaders. Take this opportunity to grow your business on it's already identified strengths.

2. Communication
Don't mince words. Clearly communicate your goals, objectives and required actions to your stakeholders and employees. Achieving goals is much easier when the entire team knows what's required of them.

3. Lead By Example
This one should be self explanatory. If you have any questions please speak with Wayne Gretzky or Pele.

4. Marketing
Many companies choose to slash their marketing budgets during less prosperous times. Don't fall into that trap. Managing your marketing expenses makes sense, but don't forget to continue to pursue new customers and new markets.

5. Your Customers
There's no better time to remind your customers that you are there for them than the present. When others choose to limit their interactions with their customers, you need to do the opposite and work even closer with yours. Times won't always be this challenging; collaborating today will grow stonger business relationships in the future.

On December 3rd, 2008 three Thai VADs, A-Host, Data One and Value System, launched the Remarketer Program.

"Software Revenues Up", "Still Looks Strong", "Hits Its Mark"

Oracle announced their second quarter financial results yesterday and the news was positive. Despite a challenging economy overall software revenues were up and the rest of the business looked good.

I only wanted to touch on the financial update posted yesterday but if you want some more information please visit the links below:

With respect to my focus area, increasing Oracle business at the Remarketer and QuickStart partner levels via our global distribution partners, I have to say business has been tough but our distributors have been up to the challenge. Their drive, attention and persistence have been phenomenal, especially in today's financial climate.

Our team will continue to deliver new content for use by our distributors to help drive new business within their reseller base. We understand achieving our goals over the next 6 months and beyond will not be easy but I think we are all ready to make it happen.

Execution is KEY in 2009

Happy New Year!

Let me start my first entry of 2009 by wishing everyone all the best this coming year. 2008 gave us a heck of a roller coaster ride (and it's not over) but one thing is for sure, we will all come out of this stronger and hopefully smarter.

Success comes from Execution.

No matter what you plan on doing this year, this quarter, or this month, just do something and do it well. Planning is all well and good but without great execution, planning is simply an exercise.

2009 will certainly bring about tighter budgets and possibly fewer projects but opportunity still exists for those that are determined (and creative) enough to find it. For example, most companies, especially SMB's, will look to reduce expenses and one of the first areas they hit is IT. Be proactive and work closely with your customers during these times; help them understand your role, goals and objectives. Help them make a knowledgeable decision with respect to their future IT plans. This is not rocket science, clear communication and excellence in execution will help you win business.

Lead by Example

Our team set out a year and a half ago with the objective of making it easier for companies to resell Oracle Technology Software. We launched the Remarketer Program with 2 distributors and within a month with had just over 10 companies having resold software under the program. Today we have over 1000 unique companies transacting as Remarketers and 38 distributors worldwide participating in the program. Without clear communication and great execution by our entire team, we would not have been able to reach this level.

Oracle VAD Remarketer Program Debuts in China

China National Software & Services is officially a Remarketer Authorized VAD.

“Under the Oracle VAD Remarketer Program, new resellers will be able to expand their market exposure by providing comprehensive and reliable Oracle technology solutions to their small and mid-size customers through a simple and fast ordering model,” said Liu Wei Gong, President Assistant and General Manager of Information Product, China National Software and Service. “As an Oracle VAD in China, we see great potential in the Remarketer Program and believe it will gain significant market traction by leveraging our nation-wide sales network.”

We anticipate that Oracle will have over 40 Remarketer Authorized VADs globally by the end of February 2009. Today, we are at 39 with an estimated 2 additional VADs ready to complete the Remarketer Program agreements in APAC alone.

Our focus continues to be on growing and developing our newest partners from day one with the help of our dedicated Value Added Distributors (VADs).

RESELLER SPOTLIGHT: Comsoft Direct (Austria)

Hello everyone! It's been a few weeks since my last entry so let's not waste any time and get to the meat of today's topic.

Over the next 12 months I'll be posting a "RESELLER SPOTLIGHT" on this blog. The purpose of this posting will be to share the success of an individual reseller that was able to do business with Oracle via Oracle's VAD Remarketer Program. I hope to provide my audience with some insight into who is doing business via the Remarketer Program and some information on the opportunity the reseller was involved with. Enjoy!

SPOTLIGHT

Comsoft Direct is a European VAR that provides software management and IT services; in addition they resell multi vendor software licenses.

In November 2008, Comsoft Direct Austria had a customer requirement for Oracle Business Intelligence Standard Edition software but lacked the appropriate Oracle paperwork to fulfill the order. However, Tech Data Austria, a Remarketer Authorized VAD, was able to facilitate the order, no authorizations or additional paperwork required. Speed and efficiency was key in this particular opportunity.

Since then, Comsoft Direct Austria has officially joined Oracle's PartnerNetwork as a QuickStart Member.

We have been very impressed with the Oracle Remarketer Program and in particular the (1-click on-line) ordering system provided by Azlan / Tech Data. This enables us to streamline order processing and means that we can always be certain of providing customers with a highly responsive and accurate level of service. The Remarketer Program makes it much easier for us to sell Oracle solutions and to transact Oracle business. It delivers very significant competitive advantage to our business and, in our view, helped us to drive incremental sales and higher levels of profitability.

Current State of Affairs

The Oracle VAD Remarketer program is nearing its third year, which is expected to be the year of cultivation. In fact, the current figures of over 1,200 recruited Remarketers and over 2,000 placed orders since the launch are not to be sneezed at. These 2,000 orders were likely opportunities taken away from Microsoft SQL Server (and/or Microsoft SharePoint), IBM DB2 (and/or IBM WebSphere Application Server), and many other equivalent free and open source software (FOSS) solutions.
