Study Break?

This is where the whole process of getting my OCM will break down I reckon. Yesterday was a big day at work, which meant I didn't get a chance to write on the blog, which meant I didn't have time to study. (When I say big day at work, I mean 17 hours, so cut me some slack ;-)

But, I'm back, I'm ready... kinda, might be having another big day at work, configuring a production site of EBS isn't usually a slack day...

While I was waiting for some patches at about midnight last night, I decided to check some of the other Oracle bloggers out. Reading through some of Lutz Hartmanns blog I saw the title " DROP DATABASE INCLUDING BACKUPS with RMAN in Oracle 10g Release 2".

Do you remember having managers or developers trying to be funny saying, "yeah, I'll jump in and type 'drop database' , ha ha ha." And you'd think to yourself, "you pillic", but because they thought it was funny, you'd have to go along with it and laugh...

I can't believe they put drop database in, let alone including backups!! Now those people who thought they were funny, are now really dangerous!.

It's now the end of today, and I've spent the whole day running around after 50 different things, and haven't had a chance to do any more study, I'm not liking this new trend. maybe tomorrow...

I came across your blog today. It's the only blog I've ever read. Interesting how you're using the blog to hold you accountable for your actions.

I myself was studying Oracle 8i in 00-01'. My classmates were able to secure employment just after taking PL/SQL. Of course, I when I was ready to start looking for work, 911 had happened and the whole economy seemed to crash.

Since then I have yet to finish my internship to get my degree or get any of my certifications. I feel that all my work for those two whole years are lost.

I have been in customer service.. no where near my skill set. And looking for a way to get back into databases.

Do you think it's possible for someone with no degree, no certs, to get into that trade???

The desire is still there. I find myself analyzing the data structure of the DBs at work. I notice the little things that the VB programmers had missed.. such as the tab orders for ergonomic value.

I guess what I am asking is... Is it too late for me to go back? To study on my own and try to get back on that career path? Or must I go back to school and start anew? Which I probably cannot afford to do.

By the way, your blog is inspiring. Thank you for writing.

I am also finding this OCM thread very curious. I started studying last year, but "studying" may be a misnomer. Since it was last year, I was aiming at the 9i OCM. Have you tried to setup Advanced Replication using the 9i OEM?? *grin* I spent a couple months and not a small number of SRs, and I still have not mastered that concept. Call me stupid - I am sure there are folks out there who consider Replication easy.

OCM certification has been talked about to death in a few forums (forums.oracle.com comes to mind). For me, I view it as a challenge to learn and fully grasp features of Oracle that I have never used, nor have reason to use at my current workspace. $2000 is a lot of dough - I may or may not sit for the Practicum, but at least I am rounding myself out.

I will be curious to see your progress in this, if you would be so kind as to continue to document your efforts.
