Purpose is the Key

Successful Enterprise 2.0 initiatives have business oriented purpose. This theme emerged from the Social Media Fail session at the Web 2.0 Expo. Read the twitter stream here.

One of the best quotes from the session that has emerged is:

tie your social media strategy to measurable business objectives on your existing operating plan

We've been saying this for a while like here, here, here, even way back here.

Social Web and Enterprise 2.0 technology needs to serve the business purpose.

Good point. Early on I think there was a struggle to describe why E2.0 matter, what the purpose was, other than attracting 21 year old talent. The purpose, the meaning, the benefits are further reaching than replacing the baby boomers as they retire.
