What is Web 2.0 - Discussion
There has been some discussion of "what is web 2.0" in response to this post.
Seth Grimes suggests that my definition of web 2.0 (see the second to last sentence in the post referenced above) be enhanced like so:
Web 2.0 is the enabling paradigm, associated technologies, and design approaches that ENABLE, ON THE ONE HAND, the hyper-individualization of the experience and consumption of information AND, ON THE OTHER, INFORMATION SHARING, COMMUNITY, AND COLLABORATION.
I agree and like it. It is fuller. Unfortunately, any pseudo-philosophical duscussion of things like paradigms is bound to drive away those more interested in the empirical, tangible manifestations. (Usually those folks are driven away as soon as words like empirical and tangible are uttered.)
But if web 2.0 is about community and collaboration as well as personalization, then we really don't want the Mikes (see comments from previous post) of the interwebs to go away mad. We want them to participate. So while I might disagree with Mike's scatalogical characterizations, I get the critique.
So perhaps the terms and understandings need to be distilled even as they continue (inevitably) to expand. Would it be a fair condensation of the above to say:
web 2.0 is the community interaction web that lets You interact the way You want to
I'm not sure. There are plenty of counter examples and loopholes but it may be a starting point. What do you think?
