General Observations

thoughts:

Agility is key to results for customer (ECM vendors need to incorporate stories and proofs that our approach enables user agility).  Titan vendors like Oracle can compete in ad hoc and project based markets by providing the infrastructure to enable the same kind of internet enabled agility on Corporate platforms.

Risks/Problems: Infoglut, options paralysis. Self Service Applications is case in point. Proliferation of capabilities or answers does not guarantee or even necessarily facilitate adoption. Options are a necessary but not a sufficient condition for adoption.  Adoption is typically virally spread. However, viral spread is *viral* because it is inherently out of control and unpredictable. It is non-thinking.

Records Management:
Need the ability to burst the cloud of overwhelming records and retained info to find the kernels of usability.  Huge revenue opportunities by cutting the cost of lawyers having to read through mountains of content to determine relevance.

ECM Concepts:
Information is growing by 50% annually. 80% of that is unstructured.  Of that 80% only about 10% is "managed".  Changing technology is going through the following phases:
Now: rationalization of the portfolio
Soon: ECM integrated into core infrastructure platforms
A Bit Later: CEVAs (content enabled vertical applications) developed and adopted

On CEVAs: no swiss army knife approach. Bizs need to build CEVAs to squeeze out efficiencies in core practices. Apps need to be built and customized to the core biz practice.

On Basic Content Services:  BCS is not mature enough to build CEVAs. Use more robust and higher end offerings.
Need to tame the multi-vendor / multiple data island issues.

Managing federation through mashups
Portals are a good bandaid solution. *On the Glass* integration is provided by portals but dont conflate this with true mash-ups or composite applications.

Without aggregation and/or central management or at least policy definition/enforcement, CM team workspaces (e.g. MSSharepoint) will become additional silos of lost information.

Opportunity: self service is a big area of hype today. However, it presupposes that people know what they want/need. Need some way of helping, guiding, suggesting. Need a recommendation engine that can be leveraged across composite applications for at-a-glance guidance assistance.
